I have had birds for 18 years, but I'm lost at this point. We have ALWAYS fed 15% layer feed with scratch (1 cup) for a treat. The layer feed was available 24/7. However, birds started dropping dead and the ones that dropped dead were either RIDICULOUSLY heavy or were as bony as a starved bird so we switched the feed to a different source.

We have SINCE switched to 16% layer pellets, 1 cup of scratch, BOSS and 22% grower mixture. (Available in a metal feeder 24/7.)

My birds are so skinny, I'm afraid of them dropping dead. I just don't understand it?

All the birds are different breeds including Langshan, Cochin, Minorca and Black Australorp. Odd thing is...only 1 of the bantam chickens is affected. The other 3 are a nice healthy weight with no sign of a concave breast.

They are not allowed to free range because of predation (neighbor's dogs...).

What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it?

maybe buy them vitamins that you can add to the drinking water .

they are old enough to be on laying pellets . I actually switched mine at 5 months old. Are the laying pellets the medicated kind ? maybe also speak to someone where you buy your feed .

Someone in the emergency side gave me a "DUH" answer! Worms! I never even THOUGHT of it!

I talked to the vet and feed workers and they haven't had a case like this. Which would explain why...most don't keep their birds this long...

They WERE on layer pellets only, but I assumed it was the feed that was making them so thin. I know what I will be purchasing today! At least it's a chance for them.

If it might be worms, get some pumpkin seeds to them right away since this is a supposedly good wormer. You might also try vitamins or kelp meal in their food to correct any deficiencies they might have. I really sympathize with you watching your flock suffer. Let us know if anything works.

I would definitely assume some type of internal parasite. You probably need to clean the coop really good, put down fresh bedding, and I would give a good dose of Eprinex and then another in about 2 weeks. Read the Eprinex label. It does not treat all types of parasites so you will need to supplement with something else. I seriously doubt it is the food. When birds are heavily infested with parasites they will not lay.
