Get your fresh kraut now while you can.

For Those in VA & MD & DC -

We have ordered a bucket this year.

New Years Day supper should be a pork roast cooked in your crockpot.

Once it is done and fork tender shred it and put it back in your crockpot - reserve your juices in another container. Mix it with about a quart of good kraut, drained, and let it slow cook another 45 min or so.

Serve with a side of hoppin' john, cornbread, and other greens.

Now, we are talkin' about real eatin'!

salted and seasoned

What do you think they use for seasoning in the kraut? I made mine with just salt, water and red cabbage.

You find 'barvarian' style with garlic, carroway seeds, etc.

I don't know everything they use but you could ask.

We usually eat white shredded kraut.

I am changing up and going with sweet red this year.

We have raised our own pigs and I'd like to be adventurous this time around.

I have looked for a big salt crock but I am not willing to pay over $150 for one of the big ones. I keep hoping I will stumble on one or two. I want to do pickles in a crock too, not in jars.

Angie~ I got a #5 or #6 for 26.00 at a public auction. That's the size I used. I didn't can it yet, so I can't say exactly how much it makes. However it's enough for many meals. You really have to pack it down, so you get a lot in it. I bet it's only 3/4 full and I used at least 7 huge heads of cabbage.

Gosh, does this bring back memories. When I was a kid my parents used to grow cabbage on about a 1/4 acre. (They grew no "fun veggies as I recall.) Each fall they'd invite their friends over for a sauerkraut making party. They used to shred it into large crocks add salt and water and then weight it down with a bowling ball cut in 1/2! I don't particularly like kraut, but they sure had fun making it. What a party!

I have been to 3 auctions, Sara. Each salt crock has topped $150.

Those people probably won't even use it either.
