Today I get to pick some of the first heads of lettuce and tomatoes from my garden I started about two months ago. I'm quite proud of myself since I was a city girl and knew nothing about gardening till I started this project. I still have soooo much to learn and next year will do things differently. I've planted just about everything in my effort to turn this old farm back into a working, sustainable farm. I'm using organic methods - no chemicals or pesticides or fertilizers (unless you count the coop and stall clean outs) and using companion planting (yes the bugs are there and eat the things like radish leaves but leave the good stuff alone) and am using raised beds whose boxes I made myself.

Enjoy the view and feel free to post pics of your own gardens. I started this thread so I could link to some of the other gardening threads and my own "Journey" thread without having to repost.

I fenced the whole thing in to keep my pigs (I mean chickens, ducks and peacocks) out.

I found a pile of old tires at the back of the property and hauled them out and painted them. These are growing beans and peas:

O.K., I'll stop now - you get the idea. Not bad for a city girl. Now I just hope the peacocks don't discover it and fly over the fence and eat everything before I do.

Thanks all - I really do enjoy the garden so much. Yesterday my husband bought me a picnic table as a 50th birthday gift. I had been mentioning I wanted one in my garden so when the vegetables and watermelons and cantalopes start coming in, I can just sit right there and eat them. Can't wait to bust a ripe watermelon open right there on the picnic table and grab the salt and eat it without knife or fork or plate like when I was a little girl. The garden is my peaceful place, none of the 6 dogs are allowed in there. It's the only place on the farm where nothing (other than bugs) are crawling on me demanding attention. However, here in the deep South, it will soon be 100+ degrees with 100% humidity so time in the garden will be toasty.

I planted all heirloom seeds - bought most from Baker Creek Seeds www.rareseeds.com and corn that has not been genetically modified.

We have a large, wrap around sun porch so I was able to start most seeds inside during the winter when it was still freezing outside so don't be so jealous of our warm weather - I just had the advantage of having a large "greenhouse" to get things jump started.

Monique...
Beautiful garden! Everything looks wonderful. I know what you mean about "The garden is my peaceful place". I was sitting out back yesterday watching the water sprinkler water my garden and my son-in-law came back and ask, "Whatcha doing?" and I replied "Watching my corn grow".
How Blessed we are…God is so Good!
Happy Birthday!

Beautiful garden, Monique, you are so far ahead of me seasonally - but I don't envy you the heat of summer down there. Enjoy! And 50 isn't all that bad, the next 'zero' birthday is the one that has me worried!
