I hear people saying that babies don't need a roost pole until they are older......well, yeah, they don't NEED it, but they love it.

I gave it from day old this time and here we are, about a week later and they have aced the roost pole class.

And yes, that is a piece of wood attached to dixie cups. If it works, it works, right?

Dowels might be too narrow, hard to get balance. Why not try a little narrow strip? I have an old piece of driftwood that I had in my flowerbed and they just love it!

My chicks have always loved their roosts.

These are uh......4 blue chicks, 1 black chick, 1 splash chick, 2 red chicks and 1 polish chick!

......oh, you meant breeds?

UM.

3 of the blues and the splash are probably Andalusians. The 2 reds are probably RIR? The polish is gold laced, I think. The black is hopefully australorp. The other blue has feathers on his feet and sort of poofy cheeks? Maybe a cochin or cochin mix? Hard to say. It has a bad attitude......I separated it as it had a broken nail and was bleeding (and getting his toe pecked at). I ended up putting another blue in "isolation" with him for company and he kept attacking it. Viciously. But is okay with him if they are all in the big group.

Go figure!

The brooder is the bigges size of the big blue tubs. It looks bigger than it is in the pictures. I am hoping to get the coop finished so I can get the other younguns out of the "brooder shed".....in the next two weeks.....just in time to get these kids out and into the 4x6 brooder shed. They will have a 4x4 pen to hang outside in during the day....in another week or two once they have more feathers.

As far as this roost pole........it is a "cull" piece of wood from home depot. I think a 1x2 or something? I use 1x3 in the brooder shed for the teenagers. The actual coop will have 2x4....if I ever finish it.

I stuck a big branch in my brooder. They hop on and off. It's got a few side branches and they hop from one to another. Pretty funny, although one of the Sebrights made it far enough up the branch to make me think it might be time to put a top on my brooder!
