preventing spread of coccidiosis

It doesn't spread like that, exactly. The oocycsts are in your soil, therefore probably already in both pens. It's just when the bird's system is overwhelmed by them, that they get what we call coccidiosis. It's a protozoan type thing like giardia that you get from drinking untreated water sometimes. Guess you can track soil from one pen to another, but that pen is the same soil, same oocycsts, most likely. Some breeds and some strains are resistant to cocci, though, generally, so one pen of one breed may get it and one pen may not, though they are on the same soil.

Now I am really confused.

My chick pen is a raised pen. Off the ground 3.5 feet. Never any contact with soil or with other birds. Maybe I dont have cocci. One thing I do have....headache

Thanks for the info Speckledhen!

Death preceded by bloody stool and lethargy.

All 37 were running around acting fine last night. Went out this morning and found dead bodies everywhere. 11 at that point, up to 13 now. I did not notice any bloody stool until after they started dying off. In fact I cleaned the pen on Wed. night and all was fine.

On a side note, I am also the poster who had the fishkill in their pond this morning. Pond is 150ft from chick pens.

Confused and stressed.
Thank you again!!

I have taken the ones that appear healthy and segregated them. Put Aurymiacin (close spelling) in their waterers and am offering anything that they will eat to keep up thier strength.

I see your still having troubles!! I've never lost that many, just a few here and there. The worst and first case I had was in my run on the ground I had no idea why they we're dieing off I also had stopped feeding chick feed to early. The last case I had I lost my blue silkie and a couple mottleds again I stopped feeding chick feeder. Those were off the ground so they can get it still, even if their not on the ground.. Hang in there I hope they get better and you dont loose any more!!

If you suspect cocci, even if they have not actually been on the ground, you can certainly give a round of Corid. It is concentrated amprolium and works quite well. Some will tell you Sulmet, but that is not your first and best choice, since it won't touch one of the common types of cocci. Even feeding medicated chick starter does not insure them against cocci, trust me.
