My sweet Holly, the first ever chick I hatched died some time in the night. She laid on the floor head curled to her chest with her legs spread out behind her and eyes half-open. There is no frostbite, no way was she egg-bound, no signs of parasites or anything, no puncuture wounds or feathers to suggest a predator. She was on the roost alone, her buddy Bonnie is broody and has been sleeping in the nest box and the 4 silkies and cochins are on the floor not knowing how to roost yet. It only got to 27 last night not really that cold but I guess if she was on the roost alone even with the other chickens in the rather small coop she could have died from the cold.

Here she is:

Oh how sad. She was a beauty. I had one die for no apparent reason during the summer. Never did figure it out. None of the others seem affected by anything that might be contagious. I really didn't think it was from being cold.
