Young hen has one eye swollen. So swollen she can only see out of the corner a teeny bit. I don't know if she's sick or got something in her eye, or was stung, got into a brawl.

Gone on for a few days - she's isolated now, drinking water with baby aspirin.

Any ideas how to help her? Or what could have happened?

We had a dog that looked like this. I took him to a vet tech who immediately sent me to the animal hospital thinking the eye would have to be removed. It turned out that he had jabbed a stick in his eye and had an infection. With a good cleaning and antibiotic cream, he healed fairly fast. Good luck in helping her.

My chicken had a eye problem. infection. I used saline solution to flush and triple antibiotic to treat. She responded well to it!

This one might need a vet~ I would put her on anti biotics ASAP. I am sure someone will chime in and tell you what kind. Some vitamins also~

My cat had something similar where the inner eye lid was like that. The vet said that it was a feline herpes infection. When my chickens recently had a respiratory problem the State Poultry Vet told me that chickens can also get herpes eye infections, or otherwise known as a viral eye infection. I also think he called it LT. Anyways, I don't really know much more than that, or if it really even pertains to your situation. I hope that it heals up for you.

Wow... ouch... I think you should get her on some tylan injectable (35 mg/kg, twice day, orally or IM) and see if you can get some really good eye ointment for her. I recommend Fucithalmic eye gel - it doesn't sting like gentomycin or chloramphenicol and it works really well. Put it in her eye twice a day for 3-4 days, then once a day for at least another week or until the eye is clearing up nicely. If you are able to visit a vet, I would also ask for metacam (0.1 mg/kg, once per day) to help bring down the swelling. If you can't get ahold of metacam, then give her 55 mg/kg aspirin (usually 1 baby aspirin is about right for the average sized standard hen), once per day for a couple of days. After that, I would recommend giving her aspirin in her water (5 x 325 mg aspirin in 4 litres of water, free choice) - don't combine the aspirin/water with metacam and don't give it at the same time that you are dosing her with the low-dose single aspirin. Is there cheesy pus in the eye socket? Any bad smells? Is the rest of the face swollen? Is the other eye normal? Any respiratory symptoms?

I have a serama hen that is recovering from what appeared to be a similar eye problem. There was no smell, no drainage, she's been eating/drinking/pooping/acting normally thru the whole ordeal - she just had this HUGE bulbous eye that kept getting bigger, and her "third eyelid" was swollen/inflamed. I did manage to get a piece of nasty pine bedding out of the roof of her mouth at one point, so we're assuming this was caused by a foreign body lodged in her sinus cavity.

Antibiotics didn't help (first Tylan, and later Baytril), so it had to be opened - an unbelievable amount of cheesy puss was in there, and there was no other way for it to escape. Its been 5 days since her surgery, and she's still on twice daily Baytril injections (and will be for at least another 5 days) - she's looking better - not great, but there has been a noticeable improvement.

I hope your hen gets better Blue Moon - preferably without having to take the drastic measures I had to with mine - have you consulted with a vet about this?

It's only on her right eye - the left is fine. She's eating fine too, provided she can find the food. That was one of the reasons I isolated her.
No bad smell, a bit of clear oozing, but no pus.
Just spent a months salary on the golden retriever (who had salmonella of all things), so vet is out of the question. I'll do what I can, will try surgery if no improvement. Just nervous about cutting close to the eye. How did you do that anyway?
