Hi,

I am a volunteer native animal rescuer and carer.
A day or two ago I was called to pick up a gorgeous little duckling

which I am 99% sure is not a native.

I live on the east coast of NSW, Australia.

Please help me identify the breed of duckling so I can
put him/her with its own kind as no one has come to claim it despite
much advertisement. Could it perhaps be a hybrid or wild?

The closest I could find was a Muscovy (sp?) duckling looked similiar but I have
really no idea. As much as we would love to keep it -
I know ducklings are best in groups, so I would love to find him/her
a home with a local breeder if they would take it.

PS Why do they wag their tail when they eat - are we upsetting it?

Are the ducklings normally fairly distinctive
or do they look similar to anything else?

If they are distinctive, I guess I will start looking for a local Muscovy breeder
to see if they would like an addition to their flock.


Oh, and the tail wagging normal?

Looking at the first two pics the bill has more of a 'goose' look to it. I'm not familiar with muscovies so it could be that. From what I have read here, I think they are considered a nuisance here in the U.S.. Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong. I have heard good things too. Try the search button on here for muscovies and maybe it will have a lot of good things that you can relay to your husband;) Like Buck says don't ask just apologize with a good meal.

I was reading that the drakes can grow from 4.6 - 6.8kgs!!
(Thats as heavy as our dog!) And that an aussie Muscovy weighed in at 10kgs!!!
(um... thats 22lbs)

Is it true that ducks are best raised with ducks (like in pairs or more)?

We only have some chooks (3 x Isa Browns, 1 x Australorp).

Yay, glad tail wagging means it is happy (depite being temporarily lost)

It is about 20cm (8") long from tail to beak and weighs 191 grams -
do you know about how old that would make it?
Or is there some other measurement that tells its age?

PS It would help matters with my husband if it turned out that he wasn't the
only one the duckling spontaneously ... umm ... "exploded" on every time he picked it up

Yup, that sounds about right -
we thought native animal rescue would be awesome -
then we got bitten, scratched and poo-ed on.
Its still awesome, but you have reality in the meantime.

We have chooks, who have some v. disgusting habits -
but they are still one of the funniest animals I've seen,
we can stand at the back door and watch 'em for hours

Two of the chooks sit on my feet while I hang out the washing,
getting a free ride around the backyard

Totally worth it, wouldn't you agree?
