Hi everyone -

I've got a couple bantam cochins, who's parentage is unknown (I got them both from another BYC'er), and I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what color(s) and/or pattern(s) are involved with them?

First is Rosie - she's about 4-5 months old - I'm wondering if she would be considered a "silver pencilled"? If not, what might she be?

This second chick is about 2 months old. As a chick, this one had very pale grey down all over, and I was surprised when the reddish/buff feathers started popping out. Any idea what might be in this one's background? I have yet to name it either, because I can't decide what gender it is - it feathered out very slow, but only started turning pink in the last week or so - any guesses?

I snapped this one as a gust of wind blew its feathers up:

Thanks so much!!!

#2 is aboy. Don't know what variety. The first pullet has nice type... Im not familar with a silver penciled or maybe silver partridge?

Thanks Msbear - now that you mention it, I'm wondering the same thing. Are penciled and partridge similar? I can recognize partridge in silkies, but show me a flat feathered bird and I'm at a loss...

HappyMtn - yes, the last two pics are of the same bird. I was thinking buff/blue, too, but there seems to be a faint pattern on the breast, and some sort of weird lacing across its back. Can that happen with blue/buff crosses? Or could there be something else in there?

Would either of you (or anyone else out there) be able to give me any advice on how to pair these birds with mates in order to reproduce/improve them? I love Rosie just the way she is, and would love to have more just like her, but it seems to me that the blue/buff needs something - I can't put my finger on it tho. Of course, I'm very new at this, and I'm not sure evaluating type at this age is even possible - so far, I DO like his color mixture, but I don't know in what direction to go with him, or what kind of goals to set with him - or if I should even bother trying to do anything with him at all. Would love to hear your suggestions!

She is def silver penciled http://www.cacklehatchery.com/Silver_Penciled_Cochin_Bantam_Hen.jpg If that doesn't bring up anything, just google it. She is a really nice looking bird. Im not familiar with the variety so I cannot say how good her coloring is but her type looks good.

The boy is a cross, and you'd spend some considerable amount of time trying to make anything from him. If your goal is to obtain show quality birds from him, all hope is lost. If your goal is to obtain pretty birds but you aren't worried about accepted varieties (don't mind mutts) try breeding him to another color and see what happens

Silver penciled is basically a partridge in silver, they have the same markings

I wasn't aware that cochins had pencilled, but learn something new everyday I guess!

The 2nd is a boy, I kind of think it's a lemon blue? But could just be a blue or self blue that has color bleeding through, it's hard to say

It doesn't look penciled to me, at least not in the photo shown. Also, I see brown? Which usually indicates gold (or sunbiurned feathers). Do you have a close up of the feather pattern? Beautiful bird!

Sonoran - will get some close up pics up here this morning for you - its a cloudy day, so I'll do the best I can.

Shelley - I don't think the breeder had any self blue cochins, so I'm pretty sure its not self blue. I've seen various threads here regarding "lemon blue", but I have yet to figure out exactly what it actually is, genetically - is it a blue/buff cross? Or something else? Does mine have "lemon" in the right places for lemon blue?

Msbear - no, I don't show, and I don't mind mutts. I just want his offspring to be healthy, good natured and as typey as possible - pretty colors would just be a bonus, and the colors don't have to meet a standard for my approval. I just don't know what color mate to give this bird that will keep with the blue/gold coloring. I've gone over the genetic calculator a bazillion times, but the buff thing always messes me up. Since this guy seems to have a bit of pattern going on, I don't know if I should breed him to a solid color or a patterned color - I have a solid buff hen here, but I don't know if her genes would obliterate the blue? I guess what I'm saying is, he *could* be the start of a great new project, and I wouldn't even know it!!! Or he could be a stepping stone to another color that someone else may be working on, and I wouldn't know that either! I'm clueless here, and I'm just looking for suggestions as to what others might do with him, if anything?

Thanks again - I'll be back in a while with some more pics!

Ok, I took closer up pics of both, across their backs - not the greatest quality photos because of clouds/flash and so forth, so hopefully you can tell something. If not, I can take pics on a day when the sun is out and they'd probably be clearer. Let me know what you think!

Silver Penciled and the other looks like the beginnings of a lemon blue?? Which I think they cross splash into partridge. Just a guess:) Pretty cochins though!
