Barred Rock vs. Dominiques

I would say, in general, they have similar personality characteristics, but I think some would say the Barred Rock is a slightly better layer and the Dom is maybe more inclined to broodiness. Here is a physical side-by-side comparison of the two breeds I like, although I know you are looking for other things in your post:

I'm with speckledhen on the egg laying and broodiness.
The Dom maybe a little more cold weather hardy only due to the comb. Both are for the most part friendly, docile, easy to tame and pick up. The Barred Rock is a little larger. You cannot go wrong with either. If I were raising them to sell, I would go with the Dom. only because they are not as abundant as the Barred Rocks. Which may mean you could get a better price for them. If I only wanted eggs, probably the Rocks.

The Dominique is the oldest American breed and good ones are difficult to find. Most Dominiques have a good bit of Barred Rock bred in to their lines. True Dominiques as pictured in the Standard probably only exist with 2 or 3 Master breeders who do not part with their good stock readily. What most people call Dominiques are as much Barred Rock as Dominique.

You can't go wrong with either breed.
