As you've probably already noticed we have a new 728x90 banner ad at the bottom of the forum pages. This ad was previously only shown to forum guests and only had ads from our partnership with Google. We've now expanded this ad to all members and are making the ad space available for available for all members to advertise their products or services.

Are you looking to promote your product or service to our hundreds of thousands of chicken enthusiasts?

BackYardChickens.com has the largest and fastest growing chicken community on the internet. We’re excited to offer a few great branding and/or direct response opportunities to get your business in front of BYC visitors.

BYC Facts:
• 1st on Google for the term “chickens”
• Featured in top news stories including Newsweek, USA Today, New York Times, The Economist, Wall Street Journal, and many more
• Over 46,000 community members (as of 1/1/2010) and tens of thousands more visitors
• Adding about 80 new community members every day!

As many of our members know we have official BYC Community Sponsors that we promote at the top of the forum, in our newsletters, on our chicken supplies page, in contests, etc. These are companies with which we've established long term partnerships and we are very thankful for their continued participation and support of our wonderful community.

Of course, there are plenty of smaller organizations or businesses that would love to put their ads in front of BYC members, but aren't interested in the long term commitments that we require from our Community Sponsors. The BYC Staff have been tossing around a few different ideas since the past 11 months and after a LOT of discussion and going back to the drawing board we think we've found something that will work well for our members and also be relatively easy for us to manage.

How It Works:
Your ad will be rotated with all the other ads in our system. We guarantee that you'll receive a minimum amount of ad impressions (how many times your banner ad is viewed). If we get to a point where there are too many advertisers we'll actually stop accepting any new advertisers to ensure you get the exposure you paid for.

Two Options:

Option 1: Simple Monthly - $25 per month. Click Here
Option 2: Custom Ad Campaign - You choose how many impressions you want and how long you want your ad to run. Cost is $25 per 100,000 ad impressions. Just add as many increments of 100,000 impressions as you want to your shopping cart and provide us with your start and end dates. Click Here and purchase multiple units and/or email [email protected]

Here is an example:
Say Angie and Terrie both want to advertise homemade products on BYC.

Angie wants to do a simple monthly plan. On the other hand, Terrie is having a 10 day sale and wants a LOT of instant exposure.

Angie buys 2 months of simple monthly advertising. She'll get 200,000 impressions (views) of her ad to run over the course of about 60 days (about 3,333 ad impressions per day).

Terrie wants to do a custom ad campaign and buys 200,000 ad impressions (views) of her ad to run over the course of 10 days (20,000 ad impressions per day).

Each of them purchased the same number of ad impressions for the same price, but Terrie got a lot more "exposure" a lot quicker while Angie's ad will run for a lot longer.

Next Steps:
Once you decided on the options above go to the BYC Store and either purchase monthly or custom advertising. Make sure you also send us an email with the following:
1) A 728x90 banner ad (no animation and the ad should be under 30kb)
2) A link to your website, BSA listings page, BYC Page, whatever you like.

3) Dates you want your ad to start & end

Don't have a 728x90 banner ad? You could use any of the following free services:

Do you want to become a long term BYC Community Sponsor? Please first try advertising using the forum banner above for at least one month and then email us: [email protected]

Wow! That is great! As soon as I have enough products to warrant advertising I will be interested! B.Y.C. will be the first place I consider. Thank you Nifty. It is a great idea to have advertising for the members!

Good question. Yup, that's fine. If you think your products or services are something that other members would be interested in (and are within our guidelines of what is appropriate to our community), they you are happy to give it a go.

Obviously some people will have better success than others with different ads at different times, but this gives everybody a chance to run some tests relatively inexpensively to find out.

Option 2: Custom Ad Campaign - You choose how many impressions you want and how long you want your ad to run. Cost is $25 per 100,000 ad impressions. Just add as many increments of $100,000 impressions as you want to your shopping cart and provide us with your start and end dates. Click Here and purchase multiple units and/or email [email protected]

the color in red does that mean $100,000 or 100,000 impressions

A quick note: Some have wondered why there are ads on BYC. While this thread isn't the place to discuss the necessity of having ads on BYC, we want to assure everyone that they are necessary. While many of the busy websites are considering pay-for-content systems, we're doing all we can to keep the site free and growing and improving while keeping the ads relevant and fun.

If you have any questions or concerns about why there are ads on BYC please direct them to me via PM. This thread is where we can discuss questions specific to the new opportunity for our community to put ads on BYC.

Hey Nifty!

Can we run banner ads for causes rather than for products and/or services? Not political stuff, but, for instance, I'm getting more involved in ovarian cancer awareness. Would I be allowed to run a banner for that?

Thanks - and I think this is a terrific idea!

Beth
