I just received a call last night that the frizzled Cochins my two boys are going to show in the local youth fair will not be considered a recognized breed and only frizzled birds without feathered legs are recognized. So they will only be able to place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, and not eligible for best of breed

. Even though they even said that the frizzle is a gene. So if Cochin is a breed then can someone explain to me why they would not be recognized?

That makes no sense at all. A Frizzle is frizzle regardless the breed, why in the world they would tell you they recogize the clean legs and not the featherlegs is beyond me. I'd fight that one. I have a very dear friend that raises gorgeous white frizzle in WA, she has been on Champion Row many times with her birds in open sanctioned shows. They are wrong, tell them to look at the Standard of Perfection or Bantam Standard of Perfection they're in it!

SOP: Frizzle bantams may be shown in ANY breed and VARIETY set forth in this SOP. All sections of the bird being exhibited must conform to the shape description and the color description of the breed and variety under consideration.

I am no expert but I do have a copy of the 1904 S.O.P. saved on my computer.

Bantam Cochins are judged the same way as standard Cochins. But after scanning the s.O.P., they make no mention of Frizzle. Feathered legs are mentioned so they must be fine. I just don't think that frizzling is accepted. (at least on what I am reading).

Do you have anyone in your area that has shown before to ask???

The same could be said for the color blue, but it is still an accepted variety for a given breed.

It is??? I've never seen a blue-splash silkie at a show??? Never really paid too much attention I guess. Re-reading about Cochins again, and the only ones that are simple for me to figure out are the white and black colors. And anything but a tint of green to the black is unacceptable. ANY color other than white is dq in the whites. (from what I am getting out of it.)

Accepted and "best of breed" are two different things wouldn't everyone agree???

Blues are in several breeds, including Langshans. I have seen several blues take best of breed and some even take champion largefowl.

Splash on the other hand...even though it breeds true if bred to another splash, is not accepted.

I really don't have anyone to ask. This is my boys first full year with 4H and their first year showing anything. So it was a bit disappointing. I just didn't think the frizzled cochin would be a problem.

I pm'ed a friend to check this thread out. Maybe she can be some help here.

I guess I would just show what you have and use it as experience. I'm sure your son will learn alot from the experience of talking to judges and just talking to other showers.
