i'm wondering what experiences u all have had if you've hatched in an egg carton (to keep the other chicks from bumping into the eggs). i'm considering this with my hatch.

i do it because it's way easier to clean up! All the gooey stuff stays in the egg carton and doesn't get stuck to the wire bottom. i haven't had any problem with it!

I've done it with every hatch I've had except one. The one hatch that I did not hatch in cartons did not go very well. It could have been the whole hatch over all, but I have never tried it again. It is so much easier to clean up too!

If you do decide to try it, be sure you hatch in the paper cartons. Some people will tell you to cut the bottoms of the cartons out, but I've not been able to tell any difference there either. I think it's just a preference really.

Here's a pic of one of my hatches in cartons. They do just fine.

Happy hatching!

Is it possible to use the paperboard egg flats instead of a carton, since you don't use the top anyway? Is there enough circualtion around a flat? maybe use sections of a flat?
It's just that I have a few of them and i thought it would be a good use for them and disposable!

I have 50 quail eggs that should hatch on monday I was gonna pull them out of the flats to hatch but if I dont have to that would be easier. Thanks for the info

Im hatching out in a carton this time and I kept the top because you can put it back on and turn the eggs all at the same time instead of one at a time. Its alot easier doing it this way. Mine are due to hatch this weekend. We will see how it goes.

The pics I have seen with the hatching in cartons have the bottoms of the cartons removed ( air circulation?) Must the bottoms be removed? If so, lilwispers, maybe you should remove the bottoms of the cells in another flat and replace the eggs.
Can we get an official ruling? Do we remove the carton cell bottoms?

Mine are in 2 flats 25 each when I turn them i have a couple of 3/4 in. pvc t's that I just move from one side to the other I will try to post a pic after I turn them tonight. to help people visualize. LOL

Never tried it in a still air but I guess it would work.I Used the large egg flats in my sportsman for holding goose, turkey and duck egg's because most were oversized for the reg egg rack's I had. An I made sure the bottoms of ech cup had a hole. But they were put into hatch tray out of carton for hatch stage.
