hatching in egg carton

they'reHISchickens :

The pics I have seen with the hatching in cartons have the bottoms of the cartons removed ( air circulation?) Must the bottoms be removed? If so, lilwispers, maybe you should remove the bottoms of the cells in another flat and replace the eggs.
Can we get an official ruling? Do we remove the carton cell bottoms?

I never remove the bottoms....I just remove the lid and it's good to go. I've hatched a lot of chicks that way..In answer to your other question, I have used the egg flats to hatch in too.

I've hatched both with & w/o the carton. I think I prefer the carton, however my last hatch I had a pip die because one of the babies laid up against the piped egg that was in the carton and I think it suffocated.

I have hatched both ways in several different incubator. I now believe that if your humidity is on the high side the carton hatch causes more drownings but if your humidity is on the low side it works great..... (reminds me I need to update my web page on carton hatching.)

Ok, going to be starting my FIRST shipped eggs next week and want to be sure I have this correct.

1) Paper or styrofoam?

2) Does it matter if bator is still air?

Thanks a zillion!

I noticed that putting the eggs in the paper flat (wht holes in the bottoms) REALLY threw off the temperatures in a still air. I had 103-104 readings center top of the eggs, but on the wire around the edges (WHERE THE BABIES WERE after they hatched) was only staying 93-95!! But even at 103-104 I still got hatches so......
Also the squirming kids kicked all the shell and gooky stuff everywhere anyway, so I think next time I'm gonna try it without the egg cartons and see how that goes.

Just my limited experience in a STILL AIR

1 Had no problem useing ether.

2 You cant really tilt an egg carton for egg movement in a still air because of the thermal layering.

You would be moving the eggs up an down threw the differences in temp. You could just use it for the hatch but you will be restricting air flow around the eggs. If you try it I would cut up the carton till it looked like a football jersey.
