I saw some pics of these mini cows and they were just too cute!

My niece has goats, sheep, mini pony, and I was thinking a mini cow would be a perfect addition to her farm.

Anybody know much about them? Anybody have one?

Irish Dexters are great! I don't know much about them other than they are small and a good homesteader breed.

What breed where you thinking of. Some of the cattle they now call mini's are really the original ancestors before the industry started the bigger is better craze and breeding them up. It is only now they finally figured out that bigger is not better and pound for pound the original has better feed conversion rates. Most "mini" size cattle need half an acre of good grass to thrive.

I've been eyeballing these cows for some time now. I haven't found any yet that are less than $1500.00 each. We are selling out our angus this year and I sure would like some of these instead. Have you googled for mini cows yet? Thats what I did when I got home from the state fair (enablers I tell ya)

Dexters? read here before getting dexters. http://wildthingorganics.com/raven1.html Some lines are great and other lines are just plain mean. On top of that there are genetic issues to watch out for.

What breeds are you looking for MB. We spend a lot of time in the mini/small cow community and may be able to help find a breeder. Prices are not always as bad as you posted if you know the right people.

minicattle.com is a good place to start learning about them Rob. Or email me and I will answer your questions if I can.

Your sister may kill you but your niece will likely LOVE you! Win some, lose some.

cows are gregarious by nature and will be MUCH happier with a companion of like species.

there are all sorts of mini breeds. miniature herefords, miniature zebu, miniature jerseys...

miniature hereford would probably be the way to go as herefords in general are pretty laid back.

then they have a bunch of miniature "breeds" that were created just for neat coloring like the panda cattle.

I've been told by those that have cattle that trying to rehome one cow is never a simple solution. They like company. From reading that attached article, one huge mistake was to seperate a cow from her calf and re homing her--no wonder that cow didn't like them, would you if you were in the cow's situation?
