I now have 6 broody Buff Orpington hens in the coop, and another walking around clucking. That's about a third of the flock! I only have 2 empty nest boxes for the rest of the girls.

Here's what's cookin' (from left to right):

Broody #1: 8 Lavender Orpington/Black Cochin eggs due July 14
Broody #2: 8 Buff Orpington eggs from Hinkjc due July 14
Broody #3: 8 Lavender Orpington/Black Cochin eggs due around July 1
Broody #4: 8 Buff Orpington eggs from Hinkjc due July 14 (broody has hatched from Hinkjc's flock... irony.)
Broody #5: 5 Lavender Orpington/Black Cochin eggs due July 6
Broody #6: 9 Buff Orpington eggs from our flock due July 6

WHEW! I think I got those in the right order. The color of the broodies is not that great this time of the year since they free-range almost everyday out in the sunshine. Now, let's see what hatches!

I have some peafowl eggs coming for that 7th broody. If she doesn't sit in the next couple of days, I'll put them in the bator until she decides what she wants to do.

Good golly.

How on earth are you cleaning out the broody poos? We could call that area Central Peck.

LOL! We should! There are 2 that are fierce mamas - they growl, peck and twist, and fly off the nest if our Great Pyrenees puppy gets to close. The others will just fluff up. We make all of them get off the nest at least twice a day for water and food and to take care of "business." The coop is starting to accumulate some broody poo, but that will be taken care of in a little bit, along with some fresher shavings.

That is really cool! It is amazing how they all go broody at the same time and also how you can keep track of them all lol. Its gonna be awesome when there is a zillion little chicks running around with all the mamas. Will all the mamas get along?

Buff Orp hens are the only hens that I have that will share chicks. The Cochins are really possessive of their chicks, and they seem to be a little better when it comes to chick raising. I've got 2 broody pens, so I may have to combine a couple or fix some new pens soon!
