We have a silkie roo named LaFonda. We live in the city and we love our little roo. We also live in the "country" part of the city where the lots are large and the roads are gravel. So, we talked to the neighbors and everyone thinks he's grand. But we still want to keep him quiet until 9am/ 9:30 on the weekends. This is a tough proposition since, you know, work etc. We tried putting him in the garage and letting him out. He didn't like the separation from his girls and would crow all day. We put him in a cat crate in the coop and let him out in the morning. But some days, 9 just doesn't work with the schedule. Also, you could really hear him crow from the cat crate.

So, we made this timer box out of a rubbermaid bin and to my surprise, IT WORKS GREAT!

We put the bin in the coop with the girls and we pluck him off the roost at human bedtime and put him inside and set the timer. La Fonda sometimes crows inside the bin but he can barely be heard. Mostly he sleeps until the door pops open. It is pretty dark in the box.

We modified this cat food feeder timer and attached it to the box. It is on a 24 hour timer. Very simple, it is battery operated.

I cant imagine using it as a feeder but it works well for our purposes and it's not too expensive.
All I have to say is thank goodness for Gorilla Tape and good 'ol American ingenuity.

That is a pretty crafty way to solve your problem. I would just caution you to check the batteries more often in winter. When batteries get cold they don't work as well. Pretty neat idea!

LaFonda is beautiful and you're very industrious to put a "container" together that makes living with neighbors and roosters work! Please tell me you have a Kip and Napoleon in the flock too!!!!!!"Lafawnduh" would be lost without Kip......

Thanks yall! LaFonda's name has dual meanings. The Dynamite and also SO's old school friend, Lafonda. Many have suggested we change the name, to be more gender appropriate, but I wouldn't hear of it. Especially since he comes running when you call! He is a real dreamboat and such a good roo.

The battery issue is still to be resolved. Thinking of doing the rechargeable batteries. Will probably have to replace fairly often, once a month or so. The cold weather is a concern. And who knows how this thing will hold up in high humidity. Will see. There are industrial type batteries that say they are good to below freezing. And the lithium batteries say they last longer in variable temps. Anyone have experience with this?

We used Gorilla tape since Lafonda resembles a silverback gorilla! Much more than a duck, or duct.

Also it is soooooo sticky!

GENIUS idea!

I love the Red-Green style duct tape holding it together! (BTW, I don't know if anyone here has ever watched that show, but he creates a similar contraption to feed his dog).

I think this thread should be stickied, or at least marked somehow, for future reference:thumbsup.
