Contraband Rooster and his Homemade Timer Box **Pics**

OTgator- No shows yet. We thought of going to the fair but the summer was just too crazy and I couldn't take the time. If we get to keep him that long,

I'll try for next year once he has his full plumage. I fully expect the chicken police to come a knockin' one day and then Lafonda will have to go to the adoptive family farm that has claimed him for anytime in the future.

For now though, we're so glad we get to keep him too! He is the funniest rooster I've ever met. I don't know if its a silkie thing or what.

The other thing is: he is not interested in our silkies. He only wants the standard hens. Our poor silkie girl Desiree runs around throwing herself down at his feet, but he just brushes her by. Unrequited chicken love is a sad thing to behold.

If anyone wants more details on how we made the box PM and I'll give it up. We should have done a step by step...I know there are some concerns. For now its a $30 solution we can live with, will have to just keep a close eye on the situation and adjust as necessary. We looked around at wired devices with actuators etc. We are not that smart

and the budget is thin. If anyone has ideas that are nearly free to enhance the design or if someone else builds something similar that works better please link back here so we can check it out!

brilliant! we have a solution for while we are here, but are thinking of taking off for the weekend camping, and can not imagin leaving our roo boxed in all weekend.... now just to think up a way for him to choose to go back in instead of to the roost ... hmmmm

Not sure how big of a pain or expense it would be but maybe consider something solar powered with the battery back up maybe something that could keep the batteries charged even just a thought and congrats on keeping the roo.

This off subject because it is not about your clever device but rather the rooster. Some one gave me two chicks, a cross between maran and silkie. It seems like an unlikely mix. They are two months old and calm but naturally much larger than bantams of there same age. Your rooster looks rather big (silver backed gorilla). Is he a mix also ? My two birds have silkie feathers, rose comb one is red and the other is black, one with five toes and the other with six. I am curious to know how they will develop.

Ours is not a mix and he is approximately the same size as a smaller sized LF hen. I don't know much about silkie mixes but I have read on here that the silkie feathering is generally lost in mixes...

On the timer box: I will update that recently rooster has figured out how to muscle open the door to the box and let himself out. We are back to the drawing board but it was a great thing for over a year!
