I ordered 25 day old chicks, all alleged pullets. It didn't turn out quite that way. This is my first time raising chickens and I'd feel better if someone confirmed my suspicions before seeking my refund (50 cents a bird
) Some are pretty obvious, but the Sussex and Ancona may very well be hens but they are different from their sisters so I think they are questionable.
Bluet the Blue Andalusian Roo-he crows, so no question. He's mean to the girls. Boy does he rule the roost. .
Sammy the Salmon Faverolles, his brother Ollie looked just like him but had a scissor beak and alas he didn't make it. Both have very sweet dispositions. Sammy crows, plus I understand the dark coloring is always a rooster in this breed.
Rocky the Barred Plymouth Rock (shown here with his mate Barry) He tries to tackle the hens so between that and the sickle feathers its pretty positive.
Ronald McDonald the Rhode Island Red Roo. Second in comand after Bluet. Shimery green tail feathers, comb and wattles developed way faster than his sister.
Edgar the Easter Egger. He is very, very nice. He is about twice the size of his sisters. He's got the biggest legs of any in my flock. He's been making a funny quacking sound and looking confused about where it came from.
So I'm pretty sure about all of those. Here are two on my watch list and I'm wondering if any folks have experience with sexing the sussex and ancona breeds.
First the Anconas, they are so quick its hard to take their pictures so I'm including a bunch of pictures for comparison. Connie has a small yellow comb that obviously flops over. Annie (Andy?) has a bigger, bright pinkish/red comb that stands up and noticeable bright pinkish red waddles.

Both of them together, the way they move these were tough to get, sorry they are not the best images.
Finally the Speckled Sussex'. The first time I questioned these two was when they were just 6 weeks old. Susy was beautiful and fully feathered. Specky was still downy down the middle of the back. As Specky's tail feathers came in they looked different than Susy's. It doesn't show up particularly well on photos, but some of Specky's tail feathers are pointy and ruffley. (I don't mean the feather that is obviously broken off.) Otherwise they look very similar. Specky is spookier than Susy.
