Don't you just LOVE that noise your chicken makes when she is either laying an egg (when you disrupt her) or broody.
A few days ago I was greeted by "that noise" and thought that the chicken responsible for the noise was acting a bit broody but not fully. Well today she was acting a bit more broody, though was off the nest a little after noon when I checked them. But when I locked them up this afternoon she was sitting on the nest again so I sat with her until it got dark and sure enough she is spending the night in the nest with the eggs that were laid today.
I just really want her to stay broody and be a good broody/mummy.

Hopefully this will be the first post of many.

I'd have been out there with my felt tip already, dutifully marking them. I hatch under broodies, too. Have had some disasters but also got to watch a few batches raised by the mom. Good luck!
 
Well today she is still sitting on the nest doing the dinosaur scream so I guess things are going well.

She was very hot yesterday so I took the advice of a few wonderful BYC members and filled up a couple of empty milk bottles and froze them. I put one in the coop today and wow they make a HUGE difference the coop felt like it was air conditioned.

I am going to count today as day one, so twenty and a half days left

YAY ! ! ! A broody! We love broodies! So, how many eggs does she have? What kind are they? Who is the broody ..... is it one of your Light Sussex girls?

Be sure to mark the eggs (like with a marker), because some of the other girls may hop in the nest and add eggs to it.
 
Yes it is one of my light sussex girls that I brought back from tasmania, she has only been laying for about three weeks now.
I put all the eggs that were laid in that coop yesterday(9) under her last night and this morning there was 10 but I have marked them all now.
I might have to add another nesting box, I only have two in that coop and some of the chickens are refusing to use the one that is free, crazy little things

One of my Light Sussex girls went broody over the summer, and hatched out very well. However, she did not like being a mama. After a few days with the chicks, she was done with them .... she started picking them up and tossing them around, throwing them in the air.

The other 2 Light Sussex girls (same age) have not went broody, and I hope they do not decide to during the winter!

Is it ok for her to be too hot?
she is panting so much even with her ice bottles. I could put a little frozen bottle in the nest with her but I would think that would then make her too cold.
What do I do?
 
Well today is day three and I candled some of the eggs. I know it is still quite early but if none of the eggs were fertile then I would like to know sooner rather then later so I could replace them with some other eggs. But, everything looked really good and the eggs that I did candle were definately fertile and had ity bity chicks in them.

everything is going well but I do have a question for people that have experiance in broody chickens! I haven't seen her get off the nest at all. There isn't any poo in the nest so either she hasn't poo'd in three days or she must be getting off the nest at some time. It's just that when I take her off the nest and put her on the floor of the coop she just sits their like she is sitting on the eggs still, all floppy and like her legs don't work, I know they do work though

. Is this normal or should I put her outside untill she finds the use of her legs again or twenty minutes goes by, which ever comes first.

We went out today for about 4 - 5 hours and when I got back ( at night ) she was off the nest and LOCKED OUTSIDE

I don't know how but the pop door was closed. It seems very odd to me that in the few minutes that she was outside that some freak gust of wind blows the pop door shut and not just a little shut but completely shut

anyway the eggs were cold and I don't know how long she hadn't been sitting on them for.
So be honest everybody, What are the chances these eggs have? Has anybody ever had this experience and still had a successfull hatch?
