If only everyone would read this BEFORE they get ducks.
I just want to point out to folks that are thinking of getting ducks that they are a long term commitment. They are stinky, messy, love to make muddy messes out of your yard, mess their water 50 times a day, waste a lot of food, can be VERY loud, expensive to feed, require a LOT of upkeep...but one thing they aren't is disposable.
Please consider all of the negatives before you think of buying that Easter duckling that is so adorable-they will grow.

Postcard from your duck
"Dear Mom and Dad, . This is your duck, I just wanted to send you an update since I last saw you. Remember that day you said it was time for me to be grown up and you took me to the really safe neighborhood and left me? I remember when you drove away from that strange place waving from the car, I chased after you but my legs just weren't fast enough. I was so scared but I want to show you how good I am so you'll want to come visit me. I keep thinking I have done something wrong but I know your just really busy. I am really learning a lot so hopefully I can come home soon. . Well, my first lesson as a grown up was that all dogs aren't nice. I know our dog at home was always around so I thought I could trust this one too. I soon learned a lesson in what pain was and I thought I knew was being scared was but boy I was wrong. . I learned if you stick your neck out to help someone it just might get cut off, or in my case just lose all its skin and some bones too. I am tough though mom and dad. I don't want you to worry about me. I am a good duck, if you come back for me I promise to always be a good duck. . I was hurting pretty bad but I hid from everyone. I knew you were coming back from me. I waited for three days bleeding and in pain and I am not sure why you haven't come back. I haven't gotten to eat either, but I am a good duck. When i go home with you I wont be any trouble I promise. . Its day 4 Mom and dad I tried. I did the best I could but I couldn't hold out any longer. The other ducks chased me away and passed out from pain and starvation. I woke up in the hospital and I struggled to get back to you. I told the lady my mom is coming back for me, she promised to visit every day and feed me and take care of me. Just sending this note in case you come back and cant find me. I sure miss you mom and dad but I think I am safe now and it sure feels good to be loved. (whatever was in that pill helped a lot too! ) Sincerely, Your Pekin"

...having said that, they are also one of the most amazing animals that this earth has been graced with.
If only we could all look at life through the eyes of a duck, the world would be a better place.

No offense but most people know that pets are a long term commitment (like me) and I LOVE my ducks and wouldn't trade them for the world.

But, it's a good message for "THOSE PEOPLE" if you know what I mean. VERY SAD though:hit:hit:hit:hit

This is very sad, but it's the honest to God truth about what happens to domesticated wildlife when they're abandoned. When I got my duck I knew what I was getting myself into and realized the commitment I had to put into keeping her/him. Even if it were legal to dump any animal into the wild, I personally would never have the heart to, I love all of my animals too much to let them go. I hope people will read this and realize it's not an easy job to keep a duck, but it sure is worth the ride.

While most of us DO love our ducks, many people don't research them before getting them.
In my naive view of the world, if this kind of thing happens once, it's one time too many.
It's just a reminder for people to never "impulse buy" anything with a heartbeat.

Tha should be posted here before Easter and bumped up EVERY DAY for the people who get the cute ducklings and chicks at TSC or feed store. Just as a reminder and hopefully as a deterant for those that want to get Johnny some cute ducklings to raise for a few weeks!!!!

Jennifer posted this on facebook along with a picture of an injured duck. One of many injured ducks she takes in and takes care of at Carolina Waterfowl Rescue. She is overloaded with dumped ducks. Unfortunately it is very common and luckily the state of NC has this wonderful rescue. If blows my mind the number of ducks, geese, chickens, etc. that are bought on impulse and then abandoned at various parks and ponds. What happens to the various "pets" that are unwanted in other states that don't have a rescue or that just don't get rescued. They suffer with dog bites, starvation, arrows and a million other injuries. I have seen horrible fates of some of these beautiful creatures each time I visit the CWR. I have adopted a few of them that Jennifer has spent many hours and dollars on to heal.

I do think that an information sheet should be required with each animal purchase. But that would spoil profits....wouldn't it?
