male or female howdo you tell?

how do you tell when chicks grow up if they are gong to be male or female?


i have three babies about 6/7 weeks old
they are BO, silverlace Wyandotte, barnevelder.

as i said theya re still young im just not sure what to look out for as i amnot sure when the spurs or the crowing would occure.
i do knowthat the silverlace loves to fight and do a funny neck dance and stare out the others then pounces onthem and pulls feathers ( so im not sure she is a she

if any one could give me somegeneral ideas on what to look out for it would be really appreciated

Do any of them have combs that are bigger than the others, even if they are all the same color? Also, feathers low along their backs (hackle feathers) on Roos tend to be long, thin, and pointy. Hens have fatter, rounder feathers. My RIRs were VERY easy to tell apart by 12 weeks just by looking at the combs. The hens combs didn't turn red and enlarge until approx. 18 weeks. Hope this helps! I'm by far and away NOT an expert, so if I've miss enforced you, I hope a knowledgeable person will correct me. And

Not sure what a BO is? Not quite up on the acronyms yet! But have raised some silver laced wyandottes this year. I found that my girls all feathered up much quicker than the boys, especially down the back almost a complete set of feathers. Too soon to tell about the comb with them but by week 10 you should be to see quite easily, the girls will still have a flat comb very close to the head and the boys one will be sticking out and a bit knobbly!! Quite difficult to sex the silver laces because the boys markings are so alike to the girls.

i only started with chickens my self injune/july this year! so imout of myleague a little

i will take a look at the feathers and teh combs when i get home. if i remember rightly my fav the BO ( its a buff Orpington) has already started with a comb and has a small set of waddles i thinkthere called started to grow already ill be devistated is nugget is male

i am struggling so much as i dont have two of the same breed and was unsure if i should see them as seporate or all the same when comparing as they seem to grow on different rates.


the feathers when you say long and thin is that on the back or the tail feasthers? as neither the wyan or the BO have tail feasthers yet so ill have to wait if thats the case.

hope i can get somewhere before its too late ( males are a nono where i live as i am in a street with people all around !)
 
There's a board (What Breed/Gender?) where you can post your pictures and then people who have experience with your breeds will weigh in. Sometimes you'll get lucky and a breeder will spot your post and tell you with near certainty.

Thanks! I couldn't remember when exactly I started seeing those feathers on my roos. Comb and wattle will probably be your first indicator. We had over a month between being sure they were boys to the first crow. I want to say even more like two months. Too bad you're so far away! I'd love a BO roo!!
