Aracauna, Americauna, and EE

what is the difference? I thought that EE (Easter Egger) was a nickname for Aracauna or Americauna. Can someone give me an easy idea of the differences? Thanks

Aracauna = Original breed from S. America that lays colored eggs and have no rump feathers and containn ear muffs.

Americana = Originated from the Aracauna's, but have rump feathers and throat muffs, no ear muffs. Lays colored eggs and only a few colors / colors patterns are recognized by the APA.

Easter Egger's = basically any bird that lays colored eggs, doesn't contain all traits described above.

There is no such thing as an americana, they are called Ameraucanas. If anything is labeled americana you can automatically assume it is an easter egger.


Now, Araucanas do NOT have muffs, they have tufts and are rumpless. http://www.araucana.net/

Ameraucanas have a tail and muffs/beards and conform to the breed standard. http://www.ameraucana.org/

Easter eggers are anything that has a blue egg laying gene. Does not conform to any breed standard.

Also there was a nice article in Backyard Poultry magazine written by John Blehm that stated that technically Araucanas and Ameraucanas were bred up from Easter eggers, so Ameraucanas were not originated from Araucanas. http://www.backyardpoultrymag.com/issues/2/2-3/John_W_Blehm.html

Please, please, please, if you are going to give information make sure it is correct. There is no such breed as an Americana.

The breed name that you are looking for is A M E R A U C A N A.

I apologies for any spelling errors or description (tuft / muff) errors given. Never claimed to be an expert, regardless I believe the points were taken.
