Well, it's that time of year: autumn, back-to-school, leaves will soon be falling, Halloween's around the corner, baby chicks will soon be hatching. WAIT, what was that last one again?

Yep, I have three, count 'em, three broody hens right now. Silly girls

Anybody else got a calendar-challenged girl or three?

We have a female mallard duck that has been sitting on a nest , with about ten eggs in it.( at first, I counted 22 eggs ) she has no mate,he left about a month or two ago.I take food to her and she'll get in the pond to eat and drink, but then,it's back on the nest.Is she broody,I know the eggs can't be fertile without a male.I've noticed that she rids the nest every few days of an egg.Whats up with that? Thanks, hope someone has an answer to her strange behavior....

The duck is broody, and they are most likly they are not fertile. I don't know why she rids the nest of an egg or two every few days,... maybe because she knows there bad?

I do!

I have 1 broody White Cochin Bantam sitting on 9 eggs as of Monday! And 23 chicks in the brooder. The guy at TSC told me I was going to have to put all my chicks in thermal underware for the Winter

I have a Silkie hen on six Cochin banty eggs. She's on day 3. She only lays about 6 eggs before she goes broody, so she's been broody about 5 times in her short year of life.

I figure here in South Ark. temperatures will still be pretty warm until the chickies feather out.

Well, it's good to know I'm not the only one

You folks down south definitely have better fall weather prospects for your chicks and ducks than we do up here, though, well, barring major storms

Hey Cyn, how many eggs ya have under your gal?

I've got one on two (I tossed the bad ones), one on 5 (also tossed the bad ones) and one on, hmm, y'know I don't know, I'll say at least 6

The hens are two Delawares and a BBB. All the eggs are BBB.

Well, I was thinking I had 7, but there are 8. I forgot that I slipped another BR egg under her a little while later when my Amanda laid her great big one. So, I have 3 Blue/Black/Splash Orps and 5 Barred Rocks under Glenda. She's doing well and she's a sweet broody, too. Lets us handle her just fine.

Just wanted to update this. As of day before yesterday, broody #1 has hatched out two healthy baby Buff Brahma Bantams

The proud mom is one of my largest Delaware hens, and they look pretty darn tiny out there with her, LOL. She is taking extra good care of them, though. Now, for the other two...
