I've noticed a few of my white jap quail occasionally standing tall and producing this chirrupping type noise - I've gone on YouTube to listen to the males crow and it doesn't really sound like that. I'm wondering if this is just the start and they are 'practising' or if girls do it as well. They are now 3 weeks old and I can tell the boys/girls with the Goldens but with the whites I can't really tell - I know you can vent sex them at 6 weeks but I was wondering if this behavior (the standing tall and chirrupping) is an indication that they are male?

thanks
ozzie

it depends... are they sanding up and yelking, or are they standing up and "singing"?

Yelking (is a fear noise):

Singing (which varies in high and low pitched to mumbles depending on the individual coturnix):

My one A & M roo when he crows it sounds like someone flapping a large sheet of metal *whapa!* LOL

Thanks Niki - I think it's yelking then. They stand up erect and start the same sound that the little chick did.

I guess I'll just have to wait a bit longer to sex the whites.

cheers

One thing to note, even though both sexes yelp, i notice the girls are a bit more whiney than the boys

I thought that was strange - I kept increasing the volume of the video to try to hear the singing...and replaying the video over and over...even the kids were straining to hear the elusive quail 'song'.

We finally gave up and just decided that it was a mystery that we'd never solve.
