I have muscovy as well. They are pretty quiet. I have a friend who swears that muscovy meat is better than any other duck. She also uses the eggs to bake with. I just look at my ducks and feed them. I do have a couple extra drakes I need to do something with.

You probably don't need an A/c in the room with the brooder since you aren't trying to maintain humidity levels and stable temperatures, like you would be with an incubator.

Hi, everyone. I mentioned a few weeks ago that we are going to be hosting a free screening of Fresh, The Movie. Well, due to the expressed interest from various folks, we felt we needed a larger space. The pastor of St. Paul's Methodist Church, who is also very interested in local agriculture, has partnered up with us to host the movie at his church in a cool theater room with projector, surround sound, and plenty of seating.

Fresh is a film about sustainable agriculture that features Michael Pollan , Joel Salatin (of pastured poultry fame), Will Allen and others . We saw it in OKC and loved it so much we decided to share it with folks in our area. We are footing the bill for this screening, so admittance is free of charge. Because we have changed the venue from our home to a more public place, it is going to cost us about 3 times as much to screen it, but we consider this to be our small contribution to local sustainable agriculture. Plus, this movie is just that good!

We will also be serving some of our homegrown, pasture fed turkey in honor of the holiday, but I realize that wouldn't be a very big deal for y'all.

I solved my own dilemma by deciding to go to Home Depot and buying plywood and additional shingles (I have most of them as well as a roll of tar paper) and will find another usefor the Deck Drain.

Hope to finish this coop this week; I'm slow!
 
Good evening everyone!!! I realized I have a problem this evening, after processing birds the other day I have a empty cage!!!!! But I am wanting to change breeds but not sure what I want to change to!!! The following is what I do have, I have a quad of Barred Rocks, a trio of Cuckoo Marans, easter eggers, black, blue, and white cochins, and black, red, white, ginger red, and partridge silkies. So I guess what I am asking is a few of yalls favorite breeds??

What am I gonna keep? My mutt layer flock until they die off or stop producing (at which time they'll become stew chickens), MFCs and silkies. After the layers die off, I'll replace with RIRs.

hi guys- got my laptop cord in today..woohoo!

anyway, what do you do for a wheezing pullet, PJ my cochin is 7 months old and has started wheezing, have her isolated, on durnacin(?) and she isn't wheezing as much today- meanwhile, spice the pullet that got in with the dogs seems no worse for, other than missing feathers- and the roo has decided any dog is fair game- we have 2 small dogs, that never bother the chickens, but roo is out for blood- actually i think that is cool- watching his girls alot closer- during the big dog vs chicken escapade, he took all his girls into the barn and hid under the truck...

now i'll go catch up reading
 
Newbie here, just wanted to say hey and ask a question or two.

I live about 1/2 way between Mounds and Beggs on several acres. I am very serious about getting into the chicken hobby. I have the scrap materials and carpentry know how to build the coop and a run, thats not a problem. My question is, where is the best place to get the chickens when I'm ready. I guess this is not the best time of year to find them locally but I really want to get started. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Monty good to see ya I have been looking for welsummers here locally and cant seem to find them I am going to go to the swap meet here in a couple of weeks and see if I can find some if not I may end up ordering some eggs and hatching them we shall see what comes up!!!
