Ok, if you don't include the cost of shipping, which really wasn't terrible anyway, you can get your bator on E-Bay which is where I bought my second one. I bought mine WITH turner BRAND NEW for about $62. Usually the bator itself costs around $70 and the turner another $40, PLUS shipping, so I got a fantastic deal. I just checked on E-Bay and the seller I got mine through doesn't seem to have any with the turner for sale right now, but if you basically stalk E-Bay, lol, you will eventually see one come up. I would go with one of the E-Bay stores for a bator personally, that's what I did. They ship fast, and it gets to you quickly, and usually with a warranty or guarantee of some sort. If you or your husband are handy with electrical wiring then you could always install the fan into a still air bator as the fans are often sold separately. All I see at the moment on E-Bay is a slightly used Little Giant bator. I use the Hovabator 1602N model. I have 2 of them and on 2 of my last 3 hatches I got a 73% hatch rate on SHIPPED eggs. My last one I had about a 30% hatch rate, but if you listen to people here on BYC they will tell you that even that is a good rate on shipped eggs. What I also got was a digital thermostat/hygrometer for each of my bators and I got those on E-Bay too. I personally believe that they are a big factor as to why I've had good hatch rates. The little thermostat that come with the bators are hard to read and easy to break. I'll keep an eye out on bators for you. I'm considering selling my bators, with turners, but not until next year, and only because I want a bigger bator, lol. Right now I can only incubate I think it's 82 eggs tops with the turners in. (I need a bigger bator like I need a hole in my head!)

In a way, it also depends on what you hatch out and what is selling at the time. I change my breeds about every 1.5-2 years. I have 7 right now so I start the change at about 1.5 years and phase one or two out. Right now I have RIW RC and Barred Rocks in the waiting area (12 weeks old). Not many peope have them here so it is a good choice to make ends meet. If I did the old stand by like RIR (not saying anything wrong with it) then sales would drop becasue everyone here sells them. I try to stick with flocks not eveyone has. Right now I am phasing out my JG and EE/Olive eggers. The EE/olive eggs might stay as they have been steady (not tons) but steady. I basically make enought to pay the feed bills take the DW out for dinner as she really hates all the birds, and buy supplies to make things better or easier to deal with. Hope this makes sense.

Also watch Craigslist and any of your local posting sites. Last year I found a set of sportsman and hatcher with electronic thermostat and all sizes of egg trays for a great price--just had to drive a couple hundred miles round trip to pick them up.

That's what I was planning to do too. See, I brought my mom with me when I moved out to the country, and so it's her, my two kids, and myself living together, and mom was a little skeptical when I got into the chickens, but she had always wanted to get into 4-H as a little girl, but her family had never had the money for it, so by putting my kids in it, it was like fulfilling her dreams, so she accepted the chickens. However, trying to get her to comprehend that the birds need to be routinely replaced because they don't lay forever is not working well. She wants to keep them all forever until they die, and she can't understand where the new chicks fit in. Though I tell her that I can sell the fertile eggs. She understands that we can make money, just not why we have to continually rotate the flocks. She has grown very attached to several of the birds. I'm not saying that I haven't too, cause I'm always out there loving on my birds, lol, but I know that they will only lay for a certain amount of time, and then laying will taper off, and then eventually stop. So I suppose that in a few years I'll start building a "retirement" coop, cause I don't think these guys are going anywhere anytime soon...

I just want to break even and maybe have the birds supply their own feed.
