Icelandic Chickens

Input please... I need to build a bigger brooder. The plan is to build something now that I can put in my new coop when I build that later this summer. I have a big plastic tub now that the "kids" go in fresh from the bator, it's big enough for the really young ones but limits their movement and flying as they get a bit bigger. I am thinking they will still go in the cozy brooder at first then graduate to the bigger brooder as their exercise needs increase.

I hear how active these Icelandics are so how much room will a couple dozen Icelandic chicks need? If I give them more vertical space do they need more floor space? I was thinking this was going to be a wall mounted unit in the new coop so not more than 2' deep so I could reach all the way to the back, but probably 3 or 4 feet tall with roosts so they could go up.

You can't offend me so tell me what you think.

Thanks,
Michelle

I think he has the original flock. He hasn't said anything about new stock. I have been reading about the Icelandics for some time, but I may have some questions about this breed. Questions I would have about them at this time are. How rare is it to get multiple combs? How hard is it to get the crest on top of the head? I'm sure some may be laughing at these questions but hey I'm very green when it comes to this breed. I'm also sure this has been covered in this thread already but where is it. lol So hope someone can help. Thanks Mike Also should I get birds from someone else to if he hasn't added new stock?

These are the instructions we used to make them.

Mine finished: I put linoleum on the floors for easy cleaning, and I cut half the top off and used hardware cloth so I can use it as a brooder.

Hi everyone from the land of NO internet. Hopefully Sunday it will be fixed and I'll be back! (it really stinks sometimes living in a rural area)

I haven't caught up on all that's happened in my absence in this thread, so if I missed something important, let me know! I'll try to catch up when I'm back fully, but with how chatty you guys are, I might not be able to!!!!

Kathy......... A huge congrats on your auctions! I think it's fantastic! You went to a lot of trouble to get the best, and I'm happy to see it's paying off for you!

Congrats on becoming a moderator Kelly! Remember, we knew you when you were a new egg so don't go banning any of us. Well, maybe ban a few of us from the auction section!

Come back soon!

Mary

Funny Kathy, I had already downloaded Nelly's instructions the other day and was just wondering if I need to rethink the dimensions. Brilliant minds think alike. If it ain't broke don't fix it so I guess I will just make them as she states
