Mahonri's 2nd Annual BYC EASTER HATCH. Post pics of your chicks!

I candled earlier than I originally intended because I desperately needed a pick me up. I am facing have to cull a young hen that is badly egg bound and suffering. I was so discouraged last night. I needed something to give me some hope.

Ya know how chicks are supposed to think you're their momma?

This is my last April hatch. Makayla carried them around all the time. They'd peep like crazy when they saw her and would follow her around.

We took them outside on the grass one day and I was handing them up to Kayla on the porch. They would run and hide under her skort. We'd pull them out and they'd run right back.

Here's my little "Chickie Momma"

BTW there were 7 of them under there!

I just got the funniest visual of shaking the eggs to see what is inside them. Wierd I know.

Haha, no, I usually don't even pick up the eggs. I can set the light right on top of them without taking them out of the turner. I love to watch them move and squiggle. Only a week left for my little Icelandics, I can hardly wait!

Candled last night, pulled obvious clears more to reduce stacking in the incubator.

11 of 12 shipped F1 Fuzzy splits are developing nicely
9 of 10 of my F1 EE (Marans x Ameraucana B/B/S/C) are developing nicely
21 of 32 shipped Iowa Blues developing (a couple scrambleds, think the PO was hard on them)
22 of 24 of my Marans are developing

So, I'm currently at 63 of 78 developing. 31 of 34 home eggs, 33 of 44 shipped eggs.

It's funny that the PO is kinder on the eggs from California than the ones from right next door in Iowa. LOL

Actually worked out perfect because now there is only 1 stacked egg. (I accidentally won an auction for another dozen, so had to squeeze them in.)

Oh, and I received my copies of the 2010 Standards of Perfection, so the prize is in my hot little hands!
Will get a page up for the Best Pullet/Hen Stinkeye for Week 3.

Question, how is everyone running judging on these contests?

I think everyone does it differently. This is how I did it ...
I made a BYC page and labeled each one with a number (used no names). I asked a few people to judge that had nothing to do with the hatch-a-thon, in hopes there would be no bias. Anyway, that worked for me.

This is what I was planning on doing as well. Hurley, one question about the stinkeye photos. Can we use chick photos for it? I have some good chick stink eye pics!

Hens or Pullets for this contest. I chose the topic because there was already a Cutest Chick and a Crowing Roo. Figured the ladies needed their own contest.

Contest isn't until week 3, but someone has posted a photo already and I didn't want to lose track.

I will recruit some people not involved with the contest to help judge. Entries will close Thursday of Week 3 - Mar 21st. Winner announced right before the Easter Hatch on Friday, April 23rd since I'll actually be showing Sat and Sun.

I need to know-How do you "accidentally" win an auction? I'll have to try that! "Honey, I've got 2 dozen Silkie eggs coming from CJ that I accidentally won!"

Do you think that will work?
