I do have a good bit of experience-I am not sure how I missed this one, except that it was not moving and looked "sloshy," if that makes sense? It was definitely alive, but at 10 days was very small.

Oh, I know! I wan't directing that at you, so much as the inexperienced lurkers who are following along and won't know how to determine what they're seeing yet. In general, I leave eggs in for 25 days unless a chick jumps out, or they stink, or they weep, or I have my incubators stuffed to the gills and then some...

Excellent advice. This is my first time. The ones in which I don't see what I think I should be seeing, I assume I simply don't know what I'm doing and put them back.

However, I am VERY excited to clearly see veins in some of the eggs - especially the shipped eggs. And one of the little buggers was REALLY moving around. Thrilling!

I candle early and often, for the same reason I shake my Christmas presents, I just can't wait to see what's in there.

I pulled one more turkey egg that I could tell was clear. It was a local one, not one of the shipped ones. Those speckled eggs are soo hard to see into. But all my Icelandics look great.

Oh, and the other day when I was Spring Cleaning the coop I kicked miss broody out into the yard with everyone else and she had a stash of eggs. So, as is my norm, I pulled all the eggs to bring them in the house but as I was putting them in the fridge my son said he hadn't been pulling eggs from her cause she looked like she was going to eat him

(he's WAAAAY more than a mouthful for her) Anyway, I decided to candle and one of the blue eggs was developing so I slipped it into the bator with the rest, no idea of a due date, I'm guessing maybe 10-11 days left.

When I click on this thread I always "hear" a freight train whistle blowing for some reason...........

Mary, Thanks for the tip on the Buy It Now and the fact that not clicking it removes the option for feedback. Sorry about your eggs,

but glad to hear you're getting a refund.

Mahonri, Don't cha just love how you pay into insurance in case you need it, and then when you do, they're "uhm, let's see if you REALLY need this".

and as far as whining about 60 degrees...babymakes 6 is right....

Chooks, This is my first time incubating and I'm glad to hear your recommendations on candling. I will wait...I will wait...I will wait!

The Farm Master is keeping temps and I'm using the "don't worry about the humidity until confinement period" method.
My broody Muscovy didn't quite make it on her nest full-time until after the 35 day cut-off, but she has been steady now since the 22nd. I didn't count her as part of the hatch but she'll be due just after Easter Sunday. Next time she is off the nest, I'll try and get a count of the eggs. There were 16 last time I counted and that was a few days before she got serious (and her mom and sister were also using that nest)!!

Here is my submission for the Flapper Contest. 6 week old SLW from Mt. Healthy Hatchery (2009)

Thank you for the advice - This isn't my first time but I am still inexperienced. This is all a learning process. I am overly cautious about taking eggs out. And delighted as I am learning to distinguish more and more of what I see.
If no one has said it lately - thank you to everyone who shares their experience. Life is one long classroom and I for one love what I am learning.
