We have been working with this Heritage dual-purpose breed of chicken since 2006. The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy lists this breed as being at Threatened status, and we are working to increase the numbers of birds in the hands of breeders in the US. Our flock is based on bloodlines from Mr. Brown of Ohio (from Matt John of Shady Lane Poultry), the ALBC, and Duane Urch (about 25%, 25%, and 50% each.)
Our flock day ranges on grass every day, is fed a high quality breeder/layer ration, and is healthy as can be. Our birds are gentle and friendly, and our cock birds coexist peacefully. The hens are good layers of medium sized brown eggs, and extra cockerels dress out very well. Pea combs mean the risk of frostbite is extremely low, making these excellent birds for cold climates. We feel that Buckeyes are the best all-around homestead bird there is.
We also show our birds in ABA/APA sanctioned shows, and have done very well with them. On October 3, 2009, one of our pullets won Reserve Champion American in the Open show at Lucasville, OH. At another show we attended (about 800 birds there), my daughter won CH American and RCH of the show with her cock bird. The judge there said he was one of the nicest Buckeyes he had ever seen. When I show these birds in Open sanctioned shows as an adult I routinely win BB and/or RB. We strive to breed birds to the Standard of Perfection, and while we can offer no guarantees as to how you will do at shows, the eggs you get come from birds we actually show ourselves and do well with. And although I can't take credit for the show wins of others who've purchased chicks from us, I can say they routinely do extremely well at sanctioned shows.
Please note that due to the nature of the Buckeye breed, you may have a bird feather out that may have some black in the hackles or body. This doesn't happen often, (say one out of about 200 chicks) but we mention it in order to be completely up front with our buyers so there are no surprises. Such birds will not be show quality, naturally, but can be worked with if you are diligent in culling, or sold as layers.
About Us
Our family has had poultry on and off since the early 1900s, when my great-grandfather had chickens, geese, and peafowl (as well as other livestock.) We've been working with chickens ourselves since 2001. We are Certified 4-H leaders, Life Members of the American Bantam Association and the American Poultry Association, and I am the District 5 Director of the ABA. We are members of a variety of breed clubs, including the American Buckeye Poultry Club, of which we are founders (see our website for more information.) We are participants in the National Poultry Improvement Plan, KY 61-82.
