Leghorns DO go broody. Mine never have, but seen several peeps post in the hatching section that they have broody LH that were actually good moms. Can't see how they'd cover that many eggs, but if a banty can do it, so can they.

You remind me of, well, me. I have never had an Ameraucana (of ANY color) go broody, and other people swear theirs do, and often!

Okay, good news/bad news! Found my first egg today in my LF coop from the girls we got as chicks this spring.

but...it was broken when I found it on the coop floor.

so, I am hoping that it got laid early this morning and then got stepped on when the girls got down from their perches to head out. Most of the inside was still there and the front end was REALLY squished.

but the shell was a very pretty dark brown!

Yeah about the egg, but UGH about it being broken!

Yesterday we finally got some good rain, but during rain I guess my two white peachicks didn't go back to their hutch, instead they stayed in the garden and our puppy, Rusty killed one of them! If that dog was mine I would give him away in a split second!

Sorry to hear your puppy got another 2, Thats so sad.

jl, when our girls started laying they would sometimes lay their egg while roosting. I don't know if they just didn't get to the nest box in time, or just didn't know what to do.

but congrats on first egg. I have about 8" of shavings in my coop so if one forgets now it usually doesn't get broken.

Saying I love silkies, is putting it mildly

Thanks, Miss Lydia. I've put extra bedding down to be safe! I caught the RIR hen inspecting the nest boxes after I added shavings and DD had put a fake egg in one of them. The hen was adjusting my nest, moving the shavings one at a time to where she wanted them. When she caught me watching she gave me a guilty look and booked out of there. I think I may have found the egg laying culprit!
