I have the slowest chickens. The 3 big girls are now 28 weeks and only one is laying. The other 2 show no signs of ever wanting to lay an egg. My 18 week old rooster has not crowed, not one time. He honks like a goose but not in an attempt to crow, he's just talking. He sees me coming outside and runs to me, honk, honk. Gets chased by one of the big girls, honk, honk. Flock of geese fly overhead, honk, honk. He also had no interest in the opposite sex. I would expect him to show some interest in the hen who is laying, at least. Nope. He is a big pretty boy, though. He's already bigger than all the hens.

I'm trying to decide if I want to take the coop divider down that is separating the big girls from the 2 younger ones. I think the little girl will be okay. She is very submissive to the big girls and they mostly leave her alone. They do like to bully the poor rooster though. Maybe I'll leave it up a couple more weeks to see if he starts to act like the big beautiful rooster that he is and hopefully the big girls will start giving him some respect.

Sounds like your big guy is henpecked, I know some other guys that have that problem too

I was wondering if your two other big girls were laying! Sooner or later! I agree - I would leave that divider up and hope that the rooster starts to assert himself! But I'll be interested as to what others have to say!

I just had the nicest surprise walking just 2 1/2 blocks coming back from CVS. I live in the middle of Detroits west side. Very packed houses and right on the border of Dearborn where I used to live just 3 streets over from my current home. About 3 house down from CVS I heard a Roo crow, then at the end of that block another roo answered him....and I have been Freaking out about when my roo gets old enough to crow!!! Detroits full of them...lol...and if I had even thought abought hiding 1 hen in Dearborn I would have probably been arrested....

That's how my 6 Asa Browns are- they wake up and go do their job, and leave me 6 eggs by 8:30 without complaint- total sweeties. Now my New Hampshires are another story. Maybe we will lay, maybe in the nestbox or maybe out between the coop and the woodpile, or maybe under a tree. And we will complain loudly no matter what.

The owner of the dog that tried to eat my chickens a month ago just stopped by to tell me it is loose again, so I had to round everyone up and get them in the coop. They are not happy, but I do appreciate her letting me know and I told her that. I will let them back out when I am going to hang outside with them. Hope the dog gets back home soon- she told me she was burning rubber to get down here and let me know.
