Crossroads Show (UPDATED w/ pics/link on pg. 6/post #54)

Well its raining very hard this morning and I have to load my trailer with birds and then wait for my son to get home for school so we can leave for the show....the bad part is the birds are a long, long way from the house...rain means no trailer backed up to the barn...which means carrying all the birds by hand to the driveway....boy am I going to be wore out. Just the thought of carrying 22 runners is making me tired...

At least I didnt have to wash my geese....clean water every day and they do the cleaning for me, actually I didnt even know you could wash geese without ruining their feathering and washing out all the essential oils in their feathers. I know giving a call duck a bath with mild soap can kill them...I wouldnt think it would be very good for the Sebs either.

Anyway off the show...

Had a GREAT time and saw tons of cool birds!

CONGRATULATIONS to Melinda Hoffman, her Sebastopol goose Savanah took GRAND CHAMPION Medium Goose!!!
Pretty awesome win considering how many geese (all breeds) she beat to go Grand.
Nice to meet you Melinda!

Named her "PatTZ" Thanks so much Patti!
I got a gander from Patti too.
Melinda bought 2 pairs of 2011's from Patti.
I also got a gander & goose from Jean Ribbeck (Pips&Peeps)
Thanks Jean!
Jean had some wins as well.
I will post pictures later tomorrow.

CottageRose, you took some lovely photos.

Thanks for posting them.

(Good thing I did not go...I'd have bought a bunch......they are all so pretty!!!)

Amazing...over 10,000 birds!

So much fun meeting up with friends and had some interesting conversations with some of my subjects in the photos
especially this Polish cock bird who was talking my ear off.

I was totally smitten with Jim Zimmerman's white Call Ducks!
NOTHING cuter in the world!

I'd love to get some but they'd be too vulnerable to hawks around here
unless I had a covered pen.

(Maybe someday)
One little fella had me cracking up with how he would drop
his feed pellets then gaze down at the ground looking at what he did. SO FUNNY!

And oh yeah for the first time in my life I heard hundreds of female Call Ducks
quacking at the same time! Wowzer! YIKES!

My ultimate favorite chicken was a wheaten Old English Game bantam hen.
She was amazing to look at! Isn't she BE-U-TIFUL?!

That was a nice goose that Patti sold you...she has very good birds and wins alot with them and Melinda has just been almost unbeatable in Sebs for 3-4 years now..actually I dont think I have seen her get beat in the last 3 years. We were lucky enough to place 3rd in old hens..

The thing that struck me about the Sebs at the show....so many different types on the birds...some round and a nice med. size like the standard calls for and then some really huge sebs with long bodies, I saw a trio in the show and the hens were huge birds with long, long bodies..at first I thought they were males, but no they were pullets. Sebs are in the med goose class...they are not meant to be that big. I think the longer birds with good feathering are beautiful since it does show off the curly feathers...but do we breed the Sebs to the standard or to our personal tastes? I think it just depends on if you are breeding to show or for your own enjoyment.

I personally like the longer bodies and short necks on the Sebs...but not that huge size...some of those geese were just too big to even be a med. goose.

Congratulations to Melinda and Patti on the great wins...

Jerry
