@happy duck I still have neither managed to clear out the corner of my home-office where the brooder will go, nor have i retrieved the kiddie-pool from the work-platform… The first five ducklings will be sent out from Metzer on Monday
@Magnolia Ducks The entrance to the bin is 5cm (2") high and there will be a lot of bedding, so i hope the little ones can just walk right into the bin and access the water. I can always adjust with more bedding…
@WannaBeHillBilly I am sure you will get it done! Don't get stressed out...enjoy this "quite time" now...cuz when you get those ducklings...sounds are going to fill your house! Are you using a kiddie pool for the brooder?
@happy duck Yes, i wasn't able to come up with something else, so the kiddie-pool it is. Four foot diameter should be good for 2-3 weeks, then the little ones may be able to escape and poop onto my lab-stuff…
@WannaBeHillBilly That is perfect(not about the poop). I used a kiddie pool and it worked perfect...until they did get to big. Then they they got big and I used a dog pen.
@happy duck My Plan is to have them indoors until mid March, then move them into the chicken-house (see my-coop article). That chicken-house will be modified a bit to give the young ducks more shelter and i'm planing to add a little covered run to it. They will also get a heat-pad for the cold nights. And being outside on the grassmud they will meet the five grown up ducks and make friends with them.
