Introducing Hens to New Coop: Won't Lay in Nesting Boxes?

We have just built a new coop and bigger run for our girls. From the new one they could see their old one and were constantly trying to get out to go and lay in there. As soon as I moved it out of their sight they forgot about it and are laying and sitting in the new nesting boxes.

    New coop

So we have the chook mahal in position and have introduced the new girls. So our 4 geriatric ex battery hens have been joined by one Silver laced Wyandotte (14 weeks), one Barnevelder (14 weeks), one Dorking (12 weeks) and one Light Sussex( 14 weeks). The only one that managed to work out the...

    New coop

thanks for the comment - we decided that the coop needed to be easy to clean and move. Our original coop is terrible!!!!! The 3 black trays are just large car drip trays which can be hosed off when required and the nesting boxes are pet litter trays. The frame is made from recycled F7 (framing)...

What do people do when chooks stop laying?

Thanks so much everyone for the time taken to reply - it has been most interesting. We have had the girls for just over 12 months and for about 9 months they were providing 3 or 4 eggs a day. Suddenly they all stopped at the same time. There are no mites and they are healthy from the vet's...

What do people do when chooks stop laying?

We have 4 Isa Browns, ex battery hens that have stopped laying. What do people do with their chickens when they have stopped laying but still have years to live? We are in that position with our 4 and we want them to have a good life but we would also like some eggs! Restricted in how many we...

I love this coop and the modifications you have made. We have raised vege garden beds and find that the girls dig over everything and eat all the pests as well as the greens! Have had to net the chard, beets, carrots and spuds as well as anything planted as seed!

Calcium Carbonate Supplement - How Much?

We bought calcium carbonate powder from our local farm supply for $3 - 2kg. A 3kg bag of bran for $3 and mixed 2 tablespoons Calc.Carb to 1 cup of bran with warm water. I added some flax seeds as well as they were lying about and the parrots don't like them.......Never seen such enthusiastic...

    Rubber eggs

Thanks Happy Chooks for the link - very interesting. She has been laying like this for a few weeks now, since we had a really hot day. We thought her odd laying behavior was due to heat stress but our Summer is so mild this year that can't be the reason.

Hi all, Just a little background - we have 4 Isa Browns, all rescued ex battery hens about 20 months old. We have had them about 8 weeks and right from the first day we have been getting 3 or 4 eggs a day. They are looking much healthier now :) I now have one chicken who is laying rubber eggs -...
