    Stray Roosters

Hadn't thought about catching in the evening, interesting. This is all so new to me, and we were just cruising along before they showed up. Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated.

    Stray Roosters

First time raising hens. Got the coop and run all set up and my 12 girls are loving life. They should start laying about Aug. Yesterday 2 stray roosters showed up. We live in the country, and Hubby found out who owns them. They got loose and he can't catch them. He said shoot (!) them. I...

Chicken Breed recommendations for Eggs, first-timer, heat tolerance?

This is my first time with chicks, so no solid advice, but an observation. Got 6 easter eggers on March 8, they are really easy to spook, even just changing water and feed-they freak. My black austrolorp (sp) purchased exactly one week later have the disposition of Tommy Chong Very laid...

    Starting with "Moonscape"

Newbie here, but enjoying the journey. Chicks are 2 and 1 weeks in the house brooder. Spring is not working with us much as far as getting the coop and run area ready. It is where my water garden use to be, so filling in with bare dirt. Thought I would have time to plant and let there be...

If you have gone dumpster diving for your chickens, raise your hand!

Years ago my Father owned a business next door to the hatchery. My Stepmother (kindest heart person) Would rescue actual birds from the dumpster! If the weather was right, culled eggs would hatch out. They had a farm and she had all manner of fowl. Enjoy your treasure!

Does one week make that much difference?

Couldn't wait, ended up at Cackle Hatchery a little after noon, got 7 Easter Eggers. They seem to be happy in their box of pine shavings covered with paper towels. Messy little fuzzy butts Loved how my 2 1/2 year old Grandson was just mezmorised by them. I think he would have climbed in...

Does one week make that much difference?

I am like a kid the day before Christmas. My chicks are scheduled to be picked up next Tues. but I am seriously thinking about going to the hatchery and seeing what they have "on the floor" and getting 6 today. Can I just put the others in next Tues. if I get these 6 early? Would it be...

    Mixing very young chicks

This concerns me also. I am scheduled to pick up my 6 black australorp chicks next Tues. from Cackle. I am getting sooo impatient, I think I will go there today and see what they have "on the floor" and get 6 to go ahead and start, surely that little amount of time between hatches will not...
