I came on here last year and learned everything I needed to know about chickens, and we've had our girls for 8 months now. However, a neighbor heard them one day and reported us so we have to get rid of them. We would love to continue getting our own eggs and were thinking we might be able to...
Dh made a small coop before we got chicks when I went out of town (so, without consulting me and without any research). He made it about 4x4 and the highest part of the roof is about 6ft, and it slants downward to about 3 1/2ft (this is where the nesting boxes are). The floor is 1/2in hardware...
Thanks, he picked Mallow (like marshmallow since she will be white) instead of Coco (I thought Coco and Lulu were so cute for the BR), but you did good! And we used the paper for the first day, then switched to paper towels when they started eating the paper. They are 10 days now, and we're...
I think it was clearance, because 2 weeks ago it's was 50% off, and a few days ago it went to 90% off (the clearance signs at dates on them, we were confused by that at first since there were 2 different signs with different prices). It might be only my store because no one here wanted to buy...
Lol, they only had 4 left of the 1/2 in (but there was a lot of 1/4 inch, flimsier) so we took all 4 and are making a bigger run than we had planned. If there is any left over, we'll sell it on craigslist!
We just got back from buying the rest of the materials needed for our coop/run, and hardware cloth was on sale for $1.98 for 4ft by 10ft! It's usually $19.98, I can't believe how lucky we were!
Dh went to the thrift store and bought these items to made a feeder. Any reason why this wouldn't work? It's so cute! We won't be able to hang it, so I know we will need to raise it up for them. Thanks!
Sorry it took so long to get back, dh made this little drawing of how he did the little feeder. They love to perch on it, so it's pretty gross by now, but it's worked wonderfully. Let me know if the drawing is confusing! We love watching our girls!
Thanks. We live in a neighborhood, so ours won't be out of their coop/run unless we are home, and even then we have a small backyard. We also live in the desert, so it doesn't really rain here.
Our run is pure dirt/clay. Do we need to put sand or shavings or anything in it? The chicks are still too little to put out there, but not much longer! How hard will it be to clean with just dirt? Will we need to clean at all (for some reason dh says we won't have to, I think it's wishful...

We have the same situation, there is no way we could put it 50 ft away. And technically, we aren't allowed to have chickens (a neighborhood thing) but some of our neighbors have some and they haven't had a problem.
Thanks for the link horsegirl, we will definitely take those things...
We are planning out our coop and dh originally wanted to put the coop right against our house, and have part of the run be under the overhang from our kitchen. Now he's wondering if that's a bad idea or if it will make our house smell or anything. The other place he wants to put it would be...
Thanks for the advice everyone. I've taken her out a few times and she doesn't like- yogurt, yogurt mixed with feed, wet feed (will eat a tiny amount), or sprouts. She loves worms, bugs, shrimp and grit. I do see her eat feed and drink in the box, and I've seen her poop several times in the last...
We got 6 new chicks last week, and they are now 6 days old. Lulu is a barred rock and she seems to be the sweetest, but I'm also a little worried about her. She likes to be held and will often fall asleep in my hand, then when I put my hand back in the box so she can jump in, she will just sit...
