We had pavers in our chicken run. We started with mulch as the cover and then went to sand. Both were pretty much a disaster. We’ve recently moved our coop to a different area in the yard and went with no pavers but a predator apron. It’s 1000% better in every way. We’ve put mulched up...
I’m going to guess cockerel. And that’s just a guess. The comb is pretty pink at this point. I added a pic of my EE hen when she was roughly 11 weeks (a bit older than yours) and you can see there’s no comb color.
We are going through this now too. We have a small urban flock of 4. Our production blue Francine (top bird) is picking the tail feathers of the others (and the easter egger in particular). We started by completely separating Francine for three days. Put her back and she started again...
First time chicken owner here. Our Speckled Sussex (~6 months old) has been acting off the last couple of days. She’s hanging in the coop (up on roost) and not eating/drinking like normal. This is a pic of her poop. Can anyone give advice as to what may be the problem? We had a polish...
My guess is cockerel based on the comb development. The comb doesn’t look to have much color but it looks pretty pronounced. And I see an iridescent feather in the tail. However, I actually have an Orloff (about 11 weeks old) and I’m still wondering what gender I have. Some say definitely...
Hey, Orloffs!!!!! Your chicks are SO cute. I’ve found too, there’s just not much info on this breed. My guess is yours are both pullets. I have a chick that we’re still guessing and it’s almost 10 weeks old 🥴. Some say definitely cockerel others (including the farm we got it from) say pullet.
While I’m new to chicks, we had one (of 4) that was VERY slow to feather. By week 2 the chick had very short (stumpy) wing feathers and just the beginning of tail feathers. Comb had some color by then too. Unfortunately it was easy to tell that we had a roo.
Thank you for your thoughts. Rust wing bars...is that a specific trait of a cockerel? I’m so interested in this breed and learning about chickens in general. 😊
Thank you for your help. I really appreciate your opinions. We bought it as a sexed pullet but I’m guessing that might not mean much with this breed. The more I learn (obsess really, lol) the more I love the Orloff. However, I’m not a patient person so this waiting game is sooooo hard for me.
