Since our girls free range in pastures all year long and we're in New England, the snow can put a damper on their outdoor activities. So, while the colorful autum leaves blanket our pastures we mow them up and store the clippings in large, heavy duty trash bags. Then when it snows we shovel...
Chocolate (colored) eggs sound pretty cool - I may go with those instead. Just like to give our egg customers a wide variety of colors in the cartons! Thanks for the chart!
Hi folks, I was looking for another breed to add to our flock here and read somewhere of one that lays a bronze colored egg. Now that I'm ready to get some, I can't find where I read that anywhere! Anyone know which breed I'm talking about? Thanks....
We bought our farm with the intention of having horses. After moving in we met one of our neighbors who had layers and sold these great farm fresh eggs. So after a while of buying hers we thought "Heck, we have plenty of room and no horses yet - why don't we get a few chickens and a coop and...
Hi - It's been a while since I've been on this website and just saw your note - sorry about that! We've got 25 6-week olds in there now. Once they're about 4 months old, we'll move them to the main coop. It was pretty comfy in there with 12 full grown birds but they mostly just sleep in there -...
Thanks for the reply and the link. I never quite knew the difference - but now I do! And I'm glad to know we'll still get all the colors and so will our customers
Thanks for the reply! We kinda like all the colors so that's not a concern. We were more worried that the colors would disappear into just whites and browns as the original heritage breed genes start to ween out. Any chance of that happening? I don't know which ones would be the dominant...
Hi folks,
I have a flock of around 350 Americaunas producing all varieties of colors of eggs - blue, olive, pink, etc. I'm looking to replenish the flock with about 25 hens every quarter and, since I have a few roosters in the group, thought I would just hatch my own instead of having to buy...
Thanks, Nicole - it's certainly been at least 50 degrees every day recently . It is was a try - it would be fun if any did hatch. The eggs won't go to waste either way - we'll either have new flock members or the dogs and the cat will have more to eat!
Hi folks, We free range our chickens and don't normally attempt to hatch any new additions. About a week or so ago we discovered a nest next to our house with about 24 eggs in it (apparently some of the girls preferred that location to the 80 nest boxes we have ). And, there are more in...

Ordered our first set of chicks, 6 Buff Orpintons and 6 Golden Comets, from the local Mackey's on March 23, 2011.
UPDATE! The Comets have arrived today, April 15, 2011!! They are now safely in their new home...
Looks like the big day was today! Our Comets are only 3 1/2 months old but we found these two little beauties in one of the nesting boxes this morning. Surprise!!
Another "betweener" here! We're on 6 acres that's currently zoned as residential but we're out in the country - minimum lot size around here seems to be 1/12 acres and there are two major horse farms within a mile radius. plus many of our neighbors have chickens, sheep and goats. We've got one...
