Mine were wild and flighty. They flew like pheasants. It wasn't unusual to find them high up in Weeping Willow trees.
Very pretty to look at.
Practical? Not so much.
In searching the web for rare combinations of Wyandotte colours, I once found a picture of a beautiful Wyandotte hen. This hen was not standard coloured, but was a Silver Laced bird - with a non-standard orange wing bow. It fascinated me. Now - I can't find that image any more in image searches...
After a year of searching I finally decided to import some Silver Laced Wyandottes from across the country. The 10 birds that I was sent really made me happy. They are from Bill Gardhouse in Ontario. He has a reputation for doing very well in big shows. After getting the birds he sent me - now I...
If the hen is silver laced, and the cock gold laced then the mating is called a "sex-linked" mating - and the colours and genders will reverse in the young. The hens will be gold laced (and true breeding) , and the roosters will be silver laced but carrying gold. It's supposed to be a yellowish...
Does anyone here have a picture of what a rooster would look like when it is Gold Laced - carrying Silver? The genetics calculators show the birds to be Yellow with Black Lacing. But that's theoretical. I'm wondering what an actual Gold Laced bird looks like when it is split for Silver...
It would seem to me that the ultimate cross to improve the type of BLRW's would not be white (either recessive - or dominant) but the best option might well be Silver Laced birds.
I say this for a number of reasons.
One, (and it's huge) is that you are already dealing with laced birds. lacing...
Gee Jim,
You actually WANT competition?
I know many fanciers who hate competition. Some will only sell poor quality birds to local fanciers to avoid any competition. I knew one guy who had a house full of trophies from showing colours and breeds that no one else ever had. As soon as anyone...
Just when I started to actually learn something - I see the old Wyandotte thread gets locked.
I think we learn the most when we are exposed to REAL opinions.
Not from endless "They are beautiful" comments.
But rather, from actual debate, reading strongly held opinions, and getting a feel...
My Wyandottes are the tamest friendliest chickens I have ever owned - bar none.
Granted, most of the my last two decades of owning chickens I had "Mediterranean" class birds - or birds with a "Game" past.
Getting Wyandottes has put the fun back in owning chickens again. Now - I can't figure...
I think every judge should HAVE TO judge they way I do - the way I was taught to. I carry on a running monologue on what the standard requires - and how the individual bird measures up to that standard - and the other birds being shown. Of course - this requires confidence in knowing the...
Lately this forum has really taken a turn for the better! Now - I am actually really learning things! Thank You!
I thank the members of this forum for their frank assessment of one another's birds. For those of us who live outside of mainstream "show country" - it is how we learn. We need more...
