Comment by 'Blueline' in article 'Coccidiosis & How To Treat It'

I forgot my thankyou to 'willowbranchfarm's for this info: Thank You. Orschilens only had a one gallon jug; $99.00 I passed and went to the next town over to a TSC. They carried the 10oz packet of "Corid". The girls all have medicated water now. Before looking this up on this great...

Heading to Orschilens (sp?) right now, time for cordid. We have a sick bird isolated. Started with DE in yogurt this am. She definitely fits the symptom; fluffed and not moving, no appetite.

Chickens died from trying to keep them warm in coop!!

Cohl0406, so sorry to read of your loss. We had a loss this summer and even though these aren't pets the loss is at times devastating. Hope the next adventure with chickens goes more smoothly. Charlie

Pros and Cons for using sand

Yea, hmm, I'm thinking you will find sand works quite well . I use play sand, not too fine, not too coarse for the girls in the coop. When I get the run reconfigured, I'll use sand, PDZ, peat, etc in that as well. Have a care when choosing your sand, some sand is so fine it will simply...

RonP; great idea, will need to do this as our eggs do crack in typical winter weather. Thanks Charlie

    Why aren't my hens laying?

The girls have continued with an egg a day. I'm thinking two of the girls are laying again.

    Why aren't my hens laying?

Yesterday the girls gave us a couple Christmas presents. I settled on adding another 18' rope of lights which are hung above the outside roost. I also settled on adding a half hour each week, am now at 12 hours of light. Charlie

LED lights for winter use in the henhouse

The 'today' in the quote would be 4 weeks and 1 day past. Yesterday, when we arrived home from our family Christmas celebration, we had a Christmas present from our girls. Two beautiful eggs! I've been adding a half hour to the timer each week, am now at 4:30 am which gives the girls 12 hours...

Heated water bowls and extension cords

A small update on winter watering. A month past I purchased a "cube" which switches "on" at 35° and "off" at 45°. Seems to be working well, no frozen water and no unnecessary evaporation when the days are warmer. Charlie

LED lights for winter use in the henhouse

Heck yea, that's a good sign! Hope it's just the first of more to come . I just got up at 6:30 am to see if my lights were on, nope. Had to go outside and re-calibrate the timer so the lights would start. Mission accomplished. Of coarse the girls spent the night "out" perching on the...

    Why aren't my hens laying?

Today I just installed a rope light in the coop. Want to help the ladies start laying again. This is their second winter and I didn't understand about adding light starting in Sept. So I want to adjust the girls light as in 14 to 16 hours per day. 1) My girls will use the outside roost...

LED lights for winter use in the henhouse

Today I installed an 18' rope light. Timer has been mastered and set for 6:30 am tomorrow. I even changed their inside roost pole to a 2x4 wide side up, they like that better at the outside roost, seem more comfortable. This is the birds second winter, last winter they layed continuously...

    Chickens' First Snow

Yep, that's exactly what we see. Only don't have enough room to make a path. That is way too funny. I need a bigger pen so I can do that to the girls. Did I say that; I'm sure I meant 'for' the girls . Thanks iwiw60. Charlie

    Chickens' First Snow

Funny how ours reacted last year to first snow. Wouldn't go onto the snow, no way no how. They'd hop down and go under the house to dirt; but not the snow. We started throwing leaves into the pen, this was enough to get them onto the leaves/snow under and scratching the leaves/snow just as...
