Thanks for your help. I suspected that I was wrong about the blood spots, but it's nice to know for sure now. I googled other images and found old forums here (that I couldn't find before posting this, of course!), and I'm perfectly comfortable now. Thank you so much!
We have a BEAUTIFUL Americauna rooster. He's a nice guy, too -- pretty calm, reasonably friendly...you know: the kind of guy you'd be proud to bring home to mom.
But we don't want (noticeably) fertilized eggs, and this boy really likes to love the ladies. We sell eggs, and don't want to worry...
Sorry, but I have to brag to SOMEONE who might care. I'm so proud of my chickens today. We got 11 eggs from 12 hens, in Minnesota, in January! WAY TO GO, LADIES!!!
This will be our hens' first winter in cold, snowy Minnesota. We selected winter-hardy breeds (3 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Leghorns, 4 Rhode Island Reds, 1 Speckled Sussex, 2 Americaunas, and 1 Barred Rock). They've got a well-constructed coop--with adequate ventilation and little or no drafts. But the...
Ever since we got chickens, people have asked all kinds of questions. We've always been able to answer them, too: why are the eggs brown? How do you get eggs without roosters? How long does it take a chick to reach adulthood? Do the eggs taste better? How do they know to get back inside when...
I've gotten LOADS of good advice from all you BYC addicts, so I'm hoping you can give me some more, please... This time, it's not related specifically to chickens, although they can certainly come into play...
Nate and I have gotten through our first year of produce/egg sales, and we're...
1) They'll get it eventually. It's their instinct to roost, and they'll do it. No worries.
2) I like to have food and water always available to my flock. I'd say yes, even though it's probably not entirely necessary if you're letting them out right away at sunrise.
3) We use pine shavings for...
Hmmm...we've been using pine shavings and haven't had any trouble. They LOVE to eat them when they're wet (if water spills on them), but otherwise leave them alone. I'm sure it's fine to leave as dirt, too. We keep fresh straw in the nest boxes, but the hens love to kick that onto the floor...
You will get better answers from more knowledgeable people than me, but I'll tell you this: I've only seen this behavior a few days with my chickens -- and those were the days when it was 95+ degrees and they couldn't get cool. Is it hot there? Do they have enough shade and water? (I use the...
Yay! We were absolutely giddy when we saw our first pullet egg (from our group of 6). That was just a few weeks ago, and now ALL 6 of the girls are laying. The eggs are getting bigger and better and more normal-shaped every day. Have fun!
