The big day has arrived, and it’s the start of my first quail adventure.
This is my first attempt at hatching eggs, I have acquired 12 x fertile japanese quail eggs.
I am amazed at the size and colour variations in the eggs. The length of my eggs range
from 35.7mm - 32.6mm long and 26.5mm...
Here are some pictures of the 10 quail chicks at 7 days old. They are starting to grow their feathers, and are looking very scruffy. Its great to see the final colours coming through, and to watch their transformation.
So here they are .......... THE TATTY TEN...
All 10 of the newly hatched quail chicks are now in the brooder, they are all eating and drinking and seem to be doing fine. While I was cleaning the brooder, I took a few more pictures of the chicks. There are some lovely colours, it will be great to see how the colours develop when they are...
Hatching Update
Chick number 8 hatched around 10am on Friday 2nd September (Day 18). Two of the remaining four eggs had pipped many hours earlier. By later on Day 18, they were sounding very weak, and making no progress at breaking their shells.
So rightly or wrongly, I assisted them into the...
Hi animal8
I was going to use anti slip matting for the base, but it was black in colour and not ideal for taking photos. So I used normal textured white kitchen paper, cut into a doughnut shape. Actually the non slip matting is underneath the paper towel, to add a little padding.
The water...
Hi animal8
Yes the incubator is the Brinsea Mini Advance, which I purchased because of the great visibility. It is my first attempt at hatching, and I wanted to get some good pictures.
Regards Bob
Here are some pictures of the 7 quail chicks that have hatched today. There are 2 more eggs pipping as I type this, which would make 9/12 so far.
The incubator was getting very cramped, with chicks and empty egg shell. So late in the day, the first 6 fully dry chicks went into the brooder...
Hi Mrs FP
Its day 16, and nothing is happening at the moment. Since they have been in lockdown, there has been very little movement. They must be conserving energy for their great escape, from their tiny shell homes.

UPDATE
Today is Day 15, and the incubator is in lockdown ready for hatching. There was quite a bit of conflicting advice (14 or 15 days), regarding when to stop turning the eggs.
I actually stopped turning half way through day 14, because at least 50% of the eggs were moving and shaking about...
DIY Egg Candler
I wanted to share with you, a simple but effective egg candler that I have just made. The total build cost is about £3 ($6), and it is very easy to make. You will only need 3 components as shown below.
1. A small 9 x LED torch (approx 95mm long x 30mm diameter) available from...
Thanks Gypsy07 for the reply and advice. I have adjusted my chart, to show 13% weight loss by stop turning day. So now at day 4, everything seems to be fine.
I did quickly candle a few of the lighter eggs at the same time as weighing, and they all seems to have red veins radiating from a...
UPDATE
Today is day 4, and I have weighed the eggs to monitor weight loss. I made a chart showing 13% weight loss over 17 days. Using this scale the eggs have lost slightly too much weight. But if the 13% should be lost between day-0 and day-15 (stop turning time), then the weight loss is...
I am using the dry incubation method for my first ever hatch of Japanese quail eggs. I started a thread earlier, asking about the RH levels inside the incubator.
Thread Link
I have been told not to let the RH level drop below 20% during incubation, and raise the level to 60% for the final few...
