Mine love birdseed too. I would suggest closing off a part of your run and planting birdseed there for them and then once it gets to a good height let 'em have it! (and just repeat)
If all the ingredients are the same %, I don't see why not. But if the grower has higher % ingredients, you might want to stick to starter.
What i am trying to say is you dont want to feed them something stronger too soon.
Question:
Where do you live? Is it possible to have a farm friend raise 2 chicks for you on the diet that is required? If you aren't too far away from Kentucky, I would love to help out with this situation.
Are you raising the chickens for eggs or meat?
Also if you on short on grass, try planting bird seed.(or maybe oats??)
If you are looking for a friendly egg laying breed, try the link below. It has a list of chicken breeds and behavior.

Unless you will be getting chicks already started and are close to that age, i would not mix them. if you are getting much younger chicks, you will have to keep them separate. Your 9 week old chickens have already established a pecking order. Chickens won't "go easy" on another chick just...
Go slow at first. Since yours are that young, mash strawberries into some plain yogurt. I held a spoon above them and let them eat it off the spoon (it cut down on the mess). Since you are the "mom" its up to you to judge how much to treat. Maybe a good ratio to work with right now is 1...
As to the poop... I never saw anything abnormal.
Do the fruit and yogurt in small portions multiple times (more interaction and makes them look forward to you)
Strawberries and grapes! they went and still go crazy for them! make sure they are bite size and they might not want them at first (its new to them, might take a day or two)
Also sometimes i mash strawberries into plain yogurt too. They really like that one but step back! the yogurt starts flying
I also kept my chicks in my room for their first two weeks but I changed it everyday. You might want to give it a scrub down once or twice a week if possible. All mine turned out fine and are healthy adults now
When my chickens were chicks, I picked them up and handled them everyday. I would sometimes give them plain yogurt or small pieces of fruit. and they would go crazy for it! Now that they are adults, I cant keep them off of me when I go out to the coop. They are very nosy and all up in my...
As long as they can stay warm, I don't see why it couldn't happen. As extra protection, I would put something up around the brooder area to keep unwanted predators away (you said you didn't have a problem but if/when they find out about your chicks, they will come looking for an easy meal.). My...
Chickens will pick up anything that catches their eye (well at least mine do). Is it possible that the two that passed could have had access to something harmful?? Also what breed of chickens did you get? Were they from a hatchery or from a local farm?
Try putting some of their feed where you would like them to go. Thats how i trick my chickens into going into their coop early for the night. Just a little shake shake of a cup of their feed and they run into the coop. Using the feed trick should work. It works for us trying to get a stubborn...
At first I called them chicks, then it moved on to My Babies. lol Now they are fully feathered and I call that flock just chickens and the name "chicks" has moved on to my new batch that came
But i believe the correct term for a female under a year is pullet and a male under a year is cockerel.
