Brinsea Octogon 20 ECO or Genesis 1588? Please help me decide...

Just to keep it fair though let us remember that we are comparing apples and oranges. The Brinsea only sets 24 chicken eggs. The Hovabator sets 42 in the auto turner which by the way is a flawless little machine. The Brinsea Octagon 40 sets 48 chicken eggs but at a price of $489!!!! I can't...

Our first hatch of spring 2009 - RIR and some mixed ones! (PICS)

Quote: I had most of my chicks hatch on day 20 and only four on day 21. My average temperature may have been a bit on the high side. I suspect that with a lot of your hatch on day 19 that you might have been a tad warm thru the set too? With that early hatch any eggs left in the bator are...

Our first hatch of spring 2009 - RIR and some mixed ones! (PICS)

Here are some pics of our first hatch for the spring of 2009. Mostly our Rhode Island Reds, some Barred Rocks crossed with our RIR roos and also a couple Buff Orps and GL Wynandottes mixed in for fun. We set 36 eggs, pulled 10 quitters by day 18 from the bator, had 7 no shows that were almost...

    Who's tired of the killing?

Here in eastern Ontario we abide by the 3 S's... Shoot Shovel Shut up .22 rifle is nice and quiet and will do the job. And yes, transporting live wildlife is a big no-no no matter where you live. Do what you need to on your own property with some discreetness of course. No one should...

Our coop - New spring 2008

Thanks for the replies everyone. We are hooked on chickens after struggling to keep up with Coturnix Quail the last 2 years. Man, are they a lot of work for what you get out of them! Little buggers... LOL The date is correct - I built it last spring (2008) but now that we finally have...

    Cold Weather Coops

You'll need decent insulation but don't forget to provide adequate ventilation too. We just successfully over-wintered our layer flock for the first time. We were quite proud to say the least but the project required a lot of work, especially with frozen water jugs during the cold snaps of...

    Hate my bator

I wouldn't panic either. You're doing great! That little fluctuation is still less than the "real thing." You have maintained a near-perfect average temperature too. Watch the humidity and give 'em a little pep talk as they cook away in there. Best of luck!
