I Lost my girls today :*(

That's so sad! I would be angry and heartsick too. In time I hope you get more chicks, but the question is....what will you do with the dogs? Was this their first encounter with them? They CAN be trained to leave the chicks alone, but a lot depends upon your set-up, their age, prey drive...

Need advice - Adult hen became lame 10 days ago, no signs of injury

Thanks for the suggestion of confinement Eggcessive. I will try this. Casportpony, I've never seen or experienced a slipped tendon, yet, and have only found posts about chicks with this problem, not adults. Since there is no swelling, I'll rule that out. While I think a proper exam is within my...

Need advice - Adult hen became lame 10 days ago, no signs of injury

Does a slipped achilles occur in adults, or only chicks? There's nothing for her to get injured on in the coop/run so I have to believe its from jumping off the roost. The hen is about 14 months old, and one of only three in the flock. All came from the same hatchery and all have been healthy...

Need advice - Adult hen became lame 10 days ago, no signs of injury

About 10 days ago one hen began limping badly. There are no signs of injury, no swelling in foot or leg. She's not putting any weight on the right leg but otherwise appears alert and behaving normally. Just inspected her again, stretched both legs straight back for comparison - nothing...

Speckled Sussex haven't laid in 5 months - any suggestions?

We have three Sussex that haven't given us a single egg in 5 months. The Buff Orp and two Americaunas lay regularly but not the Sussex. They're all 26 months old. Surely that's not TOO old for that breed, is it? Any suggestions on what may be wrong or what we can do to get them laying...

HELP! WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS BEAK? Bird having hard time eating

The beak doesn't appear to be crossed, as the top/bottom meet perfectly at the tip. Is the bottom truly too long, and the one I should trim? It is like an underbite. I gave them some blueberries and when she eats it appears that the bottom beak is pushing the berry away before she can grasp...

HELP! WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS BEAK? Bird having hard time eating

She's having a tough time picking anything up to eat. Bottom beak appears too long (since top beak is so curved). What can I do to correct this? This is my first time with chickens. Hen 7 weeks old. Do I file the bottom beak? If so, with what? Her beak always hangs open. I wanted to confer...

    can anything eat threw chickenwire?

Our coop run posts are in, and we're going to use 1" x 2" fencing all around and on top. How deep should we bury the wire and angle out at the bottom? Is 4" down and 12" out, then covered with dirt and seeded enough to keep out diggers?

24 Inch Walls - When will chicks' escape ?

Mine are two weeks old today and one made it to the top of the box this afternoon. I've already had to split them into two boxes - three in a Rubbermaid tub and four in a large cardboard box with the sides taped up for height. Help! What does everyone keep their chicks in that's large enough...

What is everyone feeding their new chicks

Bag says to keep them on this chick starter for 8 weeks. Is that ALL you feed them or can they eat other stuff without having to give them grit?

    Help! Neurologic Chick!

A couple weeks ago I picked up my very first chicks. After a few days, one would walk up to the feed and take a couple bits, then run around the bottom of the box backwards. I watched it do this (while laughing hysterically) 5 times in a row. I figured it would die for sure and too had...
