    Are Silkies, Well, Strange?

I'm really glad to know that this is all just normal behavior for silkies. In my mind, I think it gives them even more uniqueness. They are indeed special. This morning I was in the hen house raking out the straw and laying in the new. All hens stayed outside--the rake scares them, even though I...

    Are Silkies, Well, Strange?

You should hear my old english game bantam roo. His crow sounds like a tone-deaf Billy Barty attempting to sing with some bad emphysema. I suppose they can't all be Pavaroti. :P

    Are Silkies, Well, Strange?

Silkies come bearded and non-bearded (clean faced). My silkie is non-bearded, and has an unconstructed view of the world, and still she exhibits poor vision behavior.

Thank you, all, for your replies. Okay, so I won't worry that my silkie is a nut-job! Silkies are so unique. I want to get a couple more now. Brian

    Are Silkies, Well, Strange?

Oh, yes...ordered a single straight run silkie chick in the blue color. She arrived cold, and separate from the others in the box. She was close to death, but putting her under a lamp saved her. I have several tame chickens, several of which jump in my lap for attention, but I've never...

    Are Silkies, Well, Strange?

This is the first time I've had a silkie. I've had chickens for many years. For most breeds, I see little difference in behavior, with most breeds exhibiting basically pretty similar behavior. I find more variety in the indivuals than in the various breeds. But silkies! My girl is 5 months old...

    Silkie -- Blind-like Behavior???

Hello. I have 29 4-month old chickens, and one is a silkie. She is incredible docile, tame, and sweet. But she is also a tad strange. For instance, she's always the last to go in at night. I don't mean by 5-10 minutes either, but by 30-minutes or so. She will just stand outside while everyone...

    Combination Garden Shed Hen House

Combination Garden Shed/Hen House, designed and built by Brian McPartland, 2007. Here is my combo shed/coop. It is 18 feet long in total. The shed portion is 6x8', and the coop portion is 8x10'. I wanted an internal shed area for feed storage, as well as a handful of tools for the neighboring...

    Racoons...Climb over wire fence?

I would think a 6' tall fence, with a single line of electrified wire at the top (6" above the top of the wire fence) could work quite well in deterring raccoons! They'd obviously have to touch it to get over, and thus, would not want to go over it. Correct? Is there anyone reading this who has...

    Racoons...Climb over wire fence?

With an electric fence, is the whole fence charged, or does the animal have to touch just the charged wire(s)?
