I will have to give the mustard trick a try.
I wouldnt assume their diet is poor. If anything I might be giving them too much variety. They currently have all the laying pellets they can eat as well as daily black oil sun flower seeds and scratch. I might be giving them too much excess because...
Well have to say that for almost 2 years now all has been going great. This was up until about a month ago when I left home and left the responsibility of the chickens to my wife. When I came home after a week I noticed that she never went to the coop and there were a TON of eggs in there. Sure...
It might have been, but I only have 4 birds so 3 eggs a day is pretty typical. There are no egg shells or anything around it, It could have been an shell less egg which would have been a first.. The girls dont eat eggs that I know of, so I hope they didnt give it a shot..
It could have been a...
So my girlfriend went out this morning to get the eggs, and when she came back in she said" I think the chicken peed on the egg and nest box. There were 3 eggs in the box but only one had the "Yellowish" Substance on top of the egg and in the vacinity of it in the bedding of the box.
Ok so I...
So this is a really new problem, 3 days ago I forgot to put the little block infront of the pen door and it blew closed while I was at work and ended up locking them out of the pen and coop for a couple night time hours. I found them ontop of the pen all huddled together. Now the past 2 nights...
Last of my hens started laying last week. took 32 weeks just about.. luckily I had 2 that started laying at the 25-26 week range so it kinda helped pass the time for the other 2 slackers.
I read somewhere in here that the golfball could promote laying, so I put one in the next box and its been there ever since. They lay in the box with the egg and the box they created that does not have an egg
I have also read in here that a goldball or hard fake egg is a good deterent for them...
I have yet to see an egg come out. If I look through the windows I can normally see them and they just stare right back at me.. Kinda like I would do if I was on the can and you caught me with the door open.
Now if I open the coop and poke my head inside normally ill get a little his or wierd...
This kid sounds dangerous. Hes up to no good in the coop, maybe just stealing the eggs to throw at something?? Maybe he just really likes chickens? Hopefully its nothing weird going on.. The real worry is that if he is comfortable enough to go into your coop at will, then sooner or later he will...
Why is a 18yo boy in the chicken coop? what is he doing in there? especially if you have talked to him before, and told him to stay out. Is he mentally challenged? I would be concerned that he is going into other places he shouldt be as well. Mainly my home.. or even the garage or my cars.
Sounds like you need a low voltage "hotwire" ran to the coop door. It will help "teach" the neighbor boy to stay out. Can you talk to his folks and have them maybe keep an eye on their kid?
Same thing started happened to me a while back. From what everyone told me on the forums she is striking her mating pose and thinks you are the rooster. Silly girl. It is funny though the little thunder stomp they do.
There is another thread buried in here where someone suggested that her...
So im wondering if anyone has ever experimented with heated roosting pole?
Its starting to get a bit colder and aside from placing a heat light in the coop I was thinking maybe I could heat a roosting pole or something.
Any ideas?
One of my RIR's does it as well. normally I will let them out of the run and go collect the eggs. She will follow me and give me a peck about mid shin/calf, each time. I figure its one of those "Hey do you know what it took to push that out and your stealing it?" things, but from what Ive...
