Run size for 7 hens, 1 Roo

Is a 144 sq. ft. run big enough for 8 birds?

What’s an ideal material for a coop that is on the ground with no floor?Q

Would this method still work in a small coop that has a hardware cloth floor? Should I just pile the "forest floor" on top of it? I have plenty of this substrate to use under my pecans and oak trees.

What is this stuff inside chickens???

No it's furthur down in the back near the tail. You have to dig around to scrape it out. Usually in bony pockets. It's hard to explain but if the chicken is breast up with legs toward you (like when you're gutting it) and you run two fingers down the iside toward you, it looks like the floor of...

What is this stuff inside chickens???

Whenever I process chickens I always scrape out this gross, dark red glandular looking tissue from the low back area. I assume it's some sort of organ but I don't really know. What is it?

disinfecting/preparing for new flock or how to prevent another disaster

So it sounds like wild birds can transmit it only if they are in contact with infected chickens, feed etc. They themselves don't get sick. So if it's been several weeks since I culled my flock and I thoroughly disinfect everything I should be OK with a new flock. Unfortunately my last batch...

disinfecting/preparing for new flock or how to prevent another disaster

So I had to cull my young flock about a month ago due to what I'm pretty sure was choryza. I want to start over but want to do this right to try and stop this from happening again. I plan on completely scrubbing the coop and run. I'm removing all organic material down to the dirt in the run...

What is this growth on her face??

Hi, my flock has been battling but slowly surviving bronchitis. This one hen however has this giant lump on her face. It actually pulls her lower jaw askew. Her eye is completely sealed shut. She is still eating and drinking but obviously suffering. I thought maybe an abscess so I attempted...

    Neurologically injured?? Pic included

He isn't drinking too readily. I offer it but he doesn't seem interested. I have I think at least two other cockerels. I looked him over and see no obvious injury. He was fine on Thursday. No unusual food. No free ranging. They live in a very larger run.

    Neurologically injured?? Pic included

I found this cockerel ( I'm pretty sure it's male) this morning on the floor of the coop. He can barely walk (kind of stumbles), keeps his neck and head very low to the ground and his wings hang down. I felt and looked all over him and cannot find any obvious injury. I can pull his wings out...
